Description	:	Marie Rebecca (Wheeldon) Hughes, 89, of Ottumwa passed away on Thursday, January 16th, 2020 in her home in Ottumwa, Iowa. Marie was born December 8th, 1930 in Batavia Iowa to Homer Criley Wheeldon and Rebecca Elizabeth (Teeter) Wheeldon. Marie spent the first 18 years of her life in Batavia before moving to Ottumwa where she spent the remainder of her life. Marie graduated Valedictorian from Batavia High School. Marie was born December 8th, 1930 in Batavia Iowa to Homer Criley Wheeldon and Rebecca Elizabeth (Teeter) Wheeldon. Marie spent the first 18 years of her life in Batavia before moving to Ottumwa where she spent the remainder of her life. Marie graduated Valedictorian from Batavia High School. She married James Paul Hughes on June 13th, 1953. To this union was born three sons: Byron (Jeanette) Hughes of Ottumwa, Alan Hughes of Ames, Iowa and Philip (Kal) Hughes of Monroeville, Pennsylvania. Marie attended Iowa Success School in Ottumwa. She worked as Secretary at W.T. Barnes law office and later for Winger Manufacturing Company, followed by Iowa Driver License until retirement. Marie enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting and crocheting her entire life. Mystery novels and solving puzzles were a favorite pastime. She developed a passion for painting in her later years. She had a fondness for cats and kittens, and gained one for frogs due to the influence of her three sons. Preceding Marie in death are her husband James Paul; her parents, Homer Wheeldon and Rebecca Wheeldon; sister Louise; brothers Vernon and True. Survivors include her sons, daughters-in-law, six grandchildren Nicole, Heidi, Amanda, Jessica, Shelby, Bella, four great-grandchildren Taylor, Cade, Kendall, Eliza, and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends, which include the four Lawrence girls Valerie, Cynthia, Karen and Stacy, whom she loved and cherished. A Celebration of Life will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday February 2, 2020 at Pennsylvania Place Retirement Community, #1 Pennsylvania Ave, Ottumwa, Iowa. Private burial will be in Batavia Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that memorials be made to: Heartland Humane Society at 314 Fox Sauk Road, Ottumwa, Iowa 52501 or to: Hospice House at 927 E Pennsylvania Avenue, Ottumwa, Iowa 52501.
