Services were 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ute, with the Rev. Edward Brandt officiating. Burial was in St. Clair Cemetery. Marie Ruth Bartels was born May 19, 1920, the daughter of Howard and Eliza (Campbell) McCleerey. She attended St. Clair No. 8 Rural School and graduated from Ute High School in 1937, where she excelled in drama and vocal music. That summer, she attended college extension classes in Denison, Iowa, offered by the Iowa State Teachers College from Cedar Falls, Iowa. She taught in rural schools for three years before he marriage. She returned to teaching in 1955, taking classes from Drake University, Morningside College and Midwestern College. She taught school in Soldier, Castana and Charter Oak-Ute, retiring in 1974. She married Elmer H. Bartels on May 18, 1941. Three children were born to this union, a daughter, Karen, and two sons, Thomas and David. They also raised a foster son, Jason. They farmed for many years. They moved into Ute in December 1973, where she enjoyed her home and her family. Her husband, Elmer, died in April 1999. She loved singing, reading and helping to care for her grandchildren. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith after her marriage in 1941 by the Rev. Hugo Nieiting. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Friendship Club, the Lutheran Ladies Choir and the Spirit Singers. She leaves to mourn two sons and their wives, Tom and Joy of Omaha and David and Belinda of Charter Oak, Iowa; a foster son, Jason of Maple Grove, Minn.; grandchildren, Jana Rhoades, Carey Ehlert, Todd Bartels, Neil Bartels and Erin Blume; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Michael, Blake, Brooke, Bailey, Sean, Devin, Benjamin, Emily, Samuel, McKenzie, Sarena, Delaney and Logan; and a sister, Bernice Hatch of California. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Elmer; a daughter, Karen; a sister, Madeline Sander; three brothers-in-law, Louis Sanders, Robert Hatch and Dr. Robert Sharp; and a sister-in-law, Del Sharp.
