"Mrs Marilla Eudora Anderson-Gardner was born March the 14, 1860. Her Parents were Mr and Mrs William Reese Anderson, they settled in Clark county in 1851. They had a donation land claim of 640 acres and they lived on and owned the claim for many years and reared a family of 13 there. They both lived to celebrate their golden wedding on the same claim. The brush and young fir trees were so thick that wild animals could stand 75 feet from you and couldn't be seen and the big firs were from 10 to 16 feet through. Just as thick as they could stand and grow. There were no white people anywhere around so mother learned the Chinook language. The Indians soon made up with her. They (Andersons) were run off the homestead 3 times but father was bound to stay and finally he built a little log cabin. The Indians were numerous, but when they came to the log cabin mother could talk to them. And she was so nice and good to them they were taken with her, and the Andersons never had any more trouble. We older children were raised with Indians, in fact. My father Killed 250 wild animals from 75 yards to half a mile from home, where now is the Totem Pole corner. [Fred Meyer now] ...my father saved his Second Son's life on a lonely trail about 75 yards from the house. The logs were piled so high on the side of the trail and brother Will got up on some of the logs and a great big brown bear was laying among the logs and he made for Will and Bogy Dog kept him away till father came. Father said "William why didn't you shoot him? You had the gun!" "No I didn't, father, I was so scared I threw the gun and started to run, when you came and saved my life. I was only a little fellow then, I couldn't of shot it anyway." On all the cleared land for half a mile we children followed the plow and picked up fern roots, tons and tons, and stacked them up and then the neighbors came in and helped father make large log heaps and they hauled fir roots and put them on the logs and burned them. Oh such fires! They burned for weeks, day and nights. I sure did my share helping clean up the farm so he could plant grain and wheat to make our different kinds of flours. We rode horses 'round and 'round to tromp out the wheat and father flailed lots of it out when the horses were busy working, and he fanned the wheat out and hauled it to flour mills 3 ½ to 12 miles, to have it ground into flour. Ansel Marbel owned the first mill. The mill was in the creek in front of his house. Just a quarter of a mile from this mill was the little old log school house where I and the other older children went and we had to walk 3 miles when we didnt crawl - and lift up young fir trees and other brush laden with snow and sleet. And we would have cougars scream and hear bears running through the salal and oh! Such scampering us children would do! Lots of bears and deers wouldn't hardly get out of the trail to let us get by. We only had 3 months in the year to go to school. Our present day Hazel Dell Ave now was just a narrow road then and only just wide enough to drive an ox team along. My father's only way of making a living was cutting hazel poles for making hoops for binding sugar barrels. Father's hoops went to many Eastern places where they barrelled sugar. My father was a very hard-working man... Mother was a mother to everybody, black and white, and never had an enemy in her life and she lived to be 75 or close to it and father lived to the age of 83. My father and mother donated the road through from the Hazel Dell School through to the State Highway (99). Mother gave an acre where the School house now stands and the ground was covered thickly with hazel brush and when they moved the school house from across the road they asked mother to name the school house and she called it Hazel Dell, very appropriate at that time. Now there's a hundred pupils and when I went to school there were from 10 to 15 and later on more came, sitting on home-made benches and desks and today if children can't have everything they want they won't go school. After long years of hard work I and all of the family graduated. (Re Sarah Jane's wedding dress) She bought the goods in Vancouver at the Hudson's Bay Co. I wear the dress every summer to some Pioneer doings. I look over the old donation claim and think you people that live here now can't realize the hard work it took to make those lovely homes, all done by hand labor. Grubbing and burning out stumps that took a month to burn out. Hundreds and hundreds of lovely pine trees were burned in log heaps. Wood was hauled into town for $1.50 a cord and fueled the train. My father made the children's boots and shoes in early days. My daddie worked all day cutting hoop pales and after supper made shoes for the kiddies. I have helped father shear sheep, helped mother wash and dry the wool, which we children tramped clean in a tub of suds made from soft soap. [...] and I have knitted many a pair of long-legged socks and also stockings - some work, believe me! I can remember Vancouver when there was but one store in it. Mother was the first white girl in it, in 1847, and father came in 1849. Some family! There have been a lot of changes since Mother Passed away in 1912. Many new homes.
