Marilyn was born on Sept. 25, 1931, to Arthur and Ida (Johnson) Carlson in Axtell and graduated in 1949 from Axtell High School where she was a cheerleader and involved in band and volleyball. Marilyn was born on Sept. 25, 1931, to Arthur and Ida (Johnson) Carlson in Axtell and graduated in 1949 from Axtell High School where she was a cheerleader and involved in band and volleyball. She married her high school sweetheart, Donald Gene Norman, on Dec. 23, 1951. Inspired by her high school English teacher, Mrs. Isabel Anderson, Marilyn enrolled in Kearney State Teachers College where she earned a two-year teaching certificate. She started her fulfilling teaching career in Mascot. Later, Marilyn would return to Kearney State College to earn her baccalaureate degree plus teacher certification. Upon receiving her bachelor of science degree in education, she accepted her dream job at Axtell Community School as the fourth-grade teacher. Her “ahead-of-the-times” classroom teaching style was “learner-centered” and involved clustered desks, hands-on activities and excursions from the classroom involving exciting field trips. She loved teaching the fourth-grade curriculum of Nebraska history and taking her students to Fort Kearny, Pioneer Village, Stuhr Museum and the State Capitol in Lincoln. When not teaching, she loved playing somerset, following Axtell Community School extracurricular events, leading Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary activities, hosting friends and family celebrations, serving in church activities, gardening, and being a Red Cross volunteer in securing citizen blood donations. In 1996, Marilyn and Don were honored as Axtell’s Outstanding Citizens. Finally, Marilyn believed her greatest accomplishment in life was being a mother, grandma and great-grandma. Her daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren would wholeheartedly agree that she was the consummate “supermom, supergrandma and supergreat-grandma.” Marilyn and Don were married for 63 years and were friends for 68 years. From this marriage, three daughters were born: Deborah, Jill and Jan. Left to celebrate her full life and noteworthy contributions are her loving husband, Don; daughters, Debby and husband Russ Higham of Waco, Texas, Jill Dahlgren and husband Rick of Axtell and Jan Popple of Elkhorn; grandchildren, A.J. Dahlgren and Zoe Dahlgren, both of Axtell, Abbey (Popple) Thull and husband Gregory of Minden, Dylan Popple and wife Ashton of Overland Park, Kan., Blair (Popple) Peterson and husband Cole of Riverdale, Addison Popple and special friend Amy Hanley of Lincoln and Mariah Popple of Elkhorn; great-grandchildren, Maddie and Hannah Merrill and Gage and Brax Thull, all of Minden, Cruz Peterson of Riverdale and Ellis Popple of Overland Park; and sister-in-law, Violet Carlson of Seattle.
