The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 20, at 10:00 AM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Memorials may be directed to the Columbus Community Hospital Foundation. Marilyn was born in Columbus, Nebraska, on April 21, 1928, to Howard C. and Pauline E. (Egger) Brown. She grew up in Columbus and graduated from Kramer High School in 1946. She took pride in being the only female student in drafting class. Marilyn then worked at Fleischer-Schmid Corporation, Columbus Family Y, and Columbus City Schools in the accounting department. She married Norman L. Hoge on June 27, 1948. They had four children. Because of her years of volunteer work, the Columbus Parent Teacher Association awarded Marilyn an honorary lifetime PTA membership for outstanding achievement. Marilyn loved sports - both as spectator and participant. As often as possible, she went swimming. Well into her 70's, Marilyn could still walk on her hands. She worked crossword puzzles every day. When jingle-writing contests were popular, Marilyn frequently submitted entries. Her most unique prize was a Shetland pony that she won for her children. Marilyn was an avid quilter and volunteered with the Columbus Community Hospital quilting group. On her own, she created 76 bed quilts of all kinds and patterns. Two of her prized quilts were sewn with hand-dyed fabric from Ghana, brought from Africa by her granddaughter Amber who studied there. Family and friends from Florida to Oregon are using bed quilts given to them by Marilyn. Marilyn also created 122 lap quilts that have been distributed across the United States to individuals battling breast cancer and other diseases. Many of the recipients regularly carried the "healing" quilts to their chemotherapy sessions. The story of Marilyn's lap-quilt making was written up and carried on a Chicago radio station. Marilyn also donated many of her quilts to be raffled at various fundraisers around the country. Marilyn is survived by: Son - Jeff (Zina) Hoge of Dallas, TX Daughter - Jane Hoge of Falls Church, VA Daughter - Jill (Pete) Smith of McCook, NE Son - Jim (Sue) Hoge of Columbus, NE Grandchildren - Amber (Dr. Travis) Kimathi of Atlanta, GA; Aaron Hoge of Las Vegas, NV; Blayne Pierson of Denver, CO; Heath Pierson of Denver, CO; Jaime Hoge of Columbus, NE; and Nicole Hoge of Columbus, NE.
