Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Clarence, Iowa. Marilyn Lucille Faas was born January 17, 1932, on the family farm in Iowa County, north of Millersburg, the daughter of Floyd and Irene (Hinrichs) Faas. It was 3:00 a.m., and an ice storm was raging. Doctor Miller had been called at his office in North English, which was 12 miles away, traveling in his horse and buggy over icy, slippery country roads. Doctor Miller arrived too late and Marilyn's father had to deliver her and told the father he did a great job. After Doctor Miller put his horse and buggy in the barn, he came back into the kitchen and sat down in front of the wood cook stove, opened the oven door, and put his feet in to warm them up. Marilyn spent her early years growing up on the Faas family farm where she attended Rosehill, a one room country school. When she was 13 years old, she was invited by her aunt and uncle, Naomi and Marlin Johnson, who was the Superintendent of the Clarence Schools, to live with them during the school year and help with their two sons. She would return home during the summer months to help her family with farm chores. She graduated from Clarence High School in 1950. She married Marvin John Pruess on October 15, 1950. The couple farmed the Pruess family century farm southeast of Clarence, until they retired in 1981. She also worked at Tracker Bakery, the B & K Grocery and Farm Store from 1967 to 1976. In 1976, she began her employment at the Clarence Nursing Home as a dish washer and kitchen help. In 1982, as her involvement in health care increased, she became a Nurses Aid and enrolled in part time night classes at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids. She graduated in 1986 with her degree as a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired from the Clarence Nursing Home in February of 2011. When the Clarence-Lowden Ambulance Service was established in 1976, she volunteered to receive training as an EMT (Emergency Rescue Tech). She was one of the original team of nine volunteers to receive EMT ambulance training. She was an active volunteer for 15 years from 1976 to 1991 working as an Ambulance Coordinator and with training new EMT’s. She has been recognized by the community for her services to include improving community mental health to the elderly and assisting people with disabilities and the elderly through Volunteer Services of Cedar County. After moving to her Assisted Living apartment in 2013, she continued to do volunteer work at the Nursing Home for five years, taking weekly blood pressures of the residents and enjoyed talking to the residents and sharing in their experiences. She was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ and the Clarence Legion Auxiliary Post Unit 286 since 1954. Surviving are one daughter, Kathleen (Richard) Lystert; two sons, Russell (Shelley) Pruess and Roger (Dionne) Pruess; six grandchildren, Eric, Neal and Keith Lyster, Jason Pruess, Misty Halmers and Samantha Meinders; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Ann Gorsh and Esther Dant; one brother, Richard (Doris) Faas; one sister-in-law, Elaine Faas; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter-in-law, JoAnn (Schulz) Pruess, one sister, Phyllis Bauer, two brothers, Robert and Donald Faas, two sisters-in-law, Maxine (Grimm) Faas and Pat (Carter) Faas, three brothers-in-law, Eldon Bauer, Charles Gorsh and Donald and Patricia (Lannert) Pruess and her parents-in-law, Wilfred and Elsie (Amend) Pruess. With over 60 years of community involvement, Clarence will miss Marilyn for she was a pillar of strength and wisdom. She empathized and encouraged all of us to do the best we can and to seek the best in others. She will always be respected, loved and missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. She was a blessing to us all. As she repeatedly stated during her stay, “I’m in a good place here.” The family would like to thank the Clarence Senior Living Facility for the many years of wonderful care given to Marilyn.
