She was born on July 5, 1922, in Savanna, Ill., the third child born to Alvin Sack and Florence (Ray) Sack. She grew up in Savanna and graduated from Savanna High School in 1940. Shortly after graduation, Marilyn began working at the Savanna Ordinance Depot and then transferred to Chicago, where she worked as a secretary at the University of Chicago/Army. It was in Chicago at a dance where she met her future husband, Dr. Melvin L. "Bud" Bernard. They were married on Feb. 20, 1948, in Chicago. They lived in Chicago for a brief time as Bud finished his education. They then settled in Maquoketa in 1949, and Marilyn took a job with local attorney J.E. Goodenow, setting up his abstract office. She worked for Mr. Goodenow for 1 1/2 years while Bud established his optometric practice. In 1952, a daughter, Donna, was born, and a son, Gary, followed in 1955. Through the years of raising and organizing her family, Marilyn also assisted her husband with his practice. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, PEO, Jackson County Historical Society, Maquoketa Country Club and the REAL Club since 1938. Marilyn enjoyed playing bridge, watching sports and following the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and Iowa State Cyclones. She loved traveling and traveled extensively around the world with Bud. She also made eight trips with Bud to Mexico with the Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity. She was known as an organizer and a planner. Her grandchildren and family were especially important to her. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Melvin "Bud" Bernard, of Maquoketa; children, Donna (Keith) Wiebersch, of Dubuque, and Dr. Gary (Dr. Barbara) Bernard, of Galena, Ill.; four grandchildren, Katelin, Matthew, Ellen and Samuel; and a brother, Russ (Sunday) Sack, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Don and Robert.
