My grandmother gave birth to my mother when she was 17, at 19 she gave birth to her son Harold. She was unable to take care of two children on her own, she placed Marion at the Savannah home for girls and Harold at the Bethesda home for boys. At the age of 18, my mother left Georgia and moved to New York to live with her mother. Marion (Betty) married her husband Jake, on January 23, 1956 in Manhattan New York. Marion was a member of the Savannah Historical Society and a past Grand Matron and member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading, painting, watching movies, listening to music and was an amazing cook. Mom had a great spirit, always a big smile and would make you laugh. She was a hard to beat scrabble player, her game was always amusing She had a love for animals which she passed to her children. Mom sang in the Choir at the Sea Isle City Methodist Church. Her favorite movie was Gone with the Wind Her favorite song was, I ♫ His Eye is On the Sparrow ♫ Rev Bill Warner conducting the rites and paying a beautiful tribute Mom's prayer card In Loving Memory of Marion E Hughes God saw you were getting tired and a cure was not to be, so he Put his arms around you and whispered, "Come to me" With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest. God Broke our hearts to prove to us, he only takes the best.
