Marion Dirk Hansum was born on September 10, 1921 to Tony and Trina (Moerman) Hansum on the family farm in Darlington Township, Charles Mix County, SD. He was baptized in the New Holland Christian Reformed Church where he later professed his faith in Jesus Christ. Marion Dirk Hansum was born on September 10, 1921 to Tony and Trina (Moerman) Hansum on the family farm in Darlington Township, Charles Mix County, SD. He was baptized in the New Holland Christian Reformed Church where he later professed his faith in Jesus Christ. As a boy, Marion rode his pony to Darlington 1 Country School, where he graduated from the Eighth Grade. He worked on the family farm until 1937, at age 16, when he went to Minnesota to pick corn for 5¢ a bushel. He also worked as a farm hand there for two years. Moving to Denver in 1939, Marion worked at Swaters Trunk Factory until he was drafted in 1942. After criss-crossing the country for a year of Army training, Marion served as Quarter Master hauling supplies in the Philippines, Australia and New Guinea. After the war, in 1945, Marion chose to return to South Dakota farming. He married Allis Kuipers on June 14, 1951 at her parents’ home. To this union six children were born: Ronald, DeeAnn, Donn, Larry, Anthony and Eva. After living briefly in Platte, and then in 1952, on a farm north of Joubert, they bought the “Deep Tilled Farm” in 1956 at the east edge of Darlington Township. Marion served his Lord where he was called. In the Platte Christian Reformed Church, he taught Sunday School and served as Elder, Deacon and on the Mission Board. He also served on boards for the Platte Christian School, Dakota Christian School and the Voting Board for Dordt College. He served on the township board and many years on the Platte Elevator Board. He was a member of Gideons. Marion loved bowling, fishing, traveling, socializing, and later in life, playing cards at Senior Citizens. He and Allis enjoyed traveling around the U.S., Canada, Alaska and Hawaii with friends. Harsh words rarely came out of his mouth, instead it was loving concern. He will be greatly missed. Marion was preceded in death by his parents, Tony and Trina; his brother, Adrian (Hattie) Hansum; and his sister, Fanny Van Zee.
