Description	:	Marion L. Kryger, 82, of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away peacefully in his home on January 19th, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. Marion was a lifelong resident of Clay County and Vermillion. Marion was born to Alfred and Christina (Hansen) Ulvog on June 5th, 1934, in Vermillion, and he was the youngest of six children. Kryger, 82, of Vermillion, South Dakota, passed away peacefully in his home on January 19th, 2017 after a brief battle with cancer. Marion was a lifelong resident of Clay County and Vermillion. Marion was born to Alfred and Christina (Hansen) Ulvog on June 5th, 1934, in Vermillion, and he was the youngest of six children. At ten months of age, his mother passed away. After her death, he was adopted by his aunt and uncle, Metha (Christina’s sister) and August Kryger, who raised him. Marion attended Norway School #3 and graduated from Vermillion High School in 1952. He married his sweetheart, Lois Bottolfson, in 1958. They had two children, Galen and Becky, and raised them on the farm west of Vermillion. Lois passed away from cancer in 1990. In 1992, Marion married Leona (Tacke) Kunkle and in 1993 they moved into Vermillion. After his high school graduation, he enlisted in the Army National Guard. He served with the guard unit in Vermillion. He attended Officer Candidate School in Oklahoma, graduated, and was commissioned as a U.S. Army 1st Lieutenant. He was called up to active duty for a short time in the early 1960’s in Ft. Riley, KS. He received an honorable discharge from the National Guard after his time at Ft Riley. Right up to the time of his death, he was a true farmer at heart. He loved being a farmer from his early days of helping his dad and throughout his farming career. He was even farming and operating the combine during harvest last fall just prior to the time he was diagnosed with cancer. Marion had a very giving heart and was active in the community in many ways throughout his life. This included service to and through his church, Bergen Lutheran Church, and many community and volunteer activities, including 4-H, Lion’s Club, Clay County Historical Society, and numerous professional and philanthropic organizations. He was always quick with a joke or story to help brighten someone’s day – usually a Norwegian joke. He enjoyed wood working and shared his talents in many ways with so many people. He enjoyed making toys and puzzles of many kinds and giving them out to many. Later in life he became interested in family genealogy and developed an extensive family tree with over 3600 names dating more than a millennia. He was also interested in history. He developed a library of photos, records and documents of Clay County Schools and Eighth Grade Graduations that spanned more than 70 years. He also compiled a Homestead Farm Map of Clay County. Each Christmas season Marion’s tradition was to make peanut brittle (as much as 180 pounds one year!) and then he would share his confections far and wide to family, friends, neighbors, and often to churches and organizations for fund raisers. Marion is survived by his second wife Leona, of Vermillion; two children, Galen (Heidi) Kryger of Tucson, Arizona and Rebecca (Lars) Aga of Vermillion; four grandchildren Kyle, Marissa, Amanda (Chris) Lynch, and Laura (Brandon) Wiemers; five great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Olivia Lynch and Micah, Ezra and Luke Wiemers; one brother, Al (Joanne) Ulvog Jr. of Vienna, Virginia and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Leona’s family members, which include six children and their families. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lois; his adoptive parents, August and Metha (Hansen) Kryger; his natural parents, Alfred and Christina (Hansen) Ulvog; one sister, Catherine Anderson, and three brothers, Adrian, Howard and Robert Ulvog. Marion was a kind, caring, and wonderful person, and he was a wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, Christian, friend and neighbor. He will be missed by many. [Courtesy: Kober Funeral Home]
