Description	:	Marion Linwood Butler, Sr. Pocomoke City-Marion Linwood Butler, Sr., 90, passed away peacefully at his Pocomoke City home surrounded by family on Saturday, August 29, 2015. Born August 17, 1925, he was a son of the late Mable Culver Butler and William Marion Butler. Marion attended Pocomoke High School but left before the end of his senior year to join the Navy. He served honorably until 1946 in the European, Pacific and American theaters aboard numerous LST's and LCT's having survived a mine explosion on LST 359 at Normandy Beach and later a torpedo hit that sank his ship on their way home.... Read More	Marion Linwood Butler, Sr. Pocomoke City-Marion Linwood Butler, Sr., 90, passed away peacefully at his Pocomoke City home surrounded by family on Saturday, August 29, 2015. Born August 17, 1925, he was a son of the late Mable Culver Butler and William Marion Butler. Marion attended Pocomoke High School but left before the end of his senior year to join the Navy. He served honorably until 1946 in the European, Pacific and American theaters aboard numerous LST's and LCT's having survived a mine explosion on LST 359 at Normandy Beach and later a torpedo hit that sank his ship on their way home. Following his discharge in 1946, he worked for Bell Atlantic for 39 years. In 1959 he entered politics as a Pocomoke City Councilman. He served as a councilman for 46 years and as the Mayor for 9 years. While in the Navy he completed his high school equivalency but the records were never forwarded through the proper channels, but he finally received the degree he earned in 2002 with the graduating class at Pocomoke High School. Numerous community involvements included the American Legion Post #93, Pocomoke Elks Lodge #1624, Worcester County Board of Education for 12 years, Maryland Municipal League, Worcester Solid Waste Commission and was a sponsor of the National Wild Turkey Association. Marion proudly served as a Mason in the AF and AM Pocomoke blue lodge, progressing through as a Shriner, Scottish Rite and Tall Cedars and was a Past Patron of the Order of the Eastern Star. Possibly his fondest membership was with the Pocomoke City Vol. Fire Dept. and Ambulance Squad, serving over 67 years. He had held offices in the fire department including Asst. Chief, President and others. He also served as the Ambulance Captain for many years. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary "Jimmy" Hicks Butler; two daughters, Alice Jean Ennis (Norman) and Penny Sue Butler; one son, Marion L. Butler, Jr. (Helen); one brother Jim Butler (Margaret); one sister, Phyllis Fair (Fred) all of Pocomoke City; nine grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters; Virginia Merritt and Minnie Dashields; two half-sisters; Dorothy and Florence and a half-brother, Arthur. A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 2, from 6-9 PM and Thursday, September 3, from 10-11 AM at the Community Center at the Pocomoke Fire Dept. The funeral service, officiated by the Rev. Jim Collison, will take place at 11 AM, Thursday, also at the Community Center. Following the service there will be an interment in the First Baptist Cemetery with military and fire department honors.
