He was a very good mathematician, and could have gone to college, but decided to marry instead. He and his wife had 5 children that grew to adulthood. He and his wife Florence retired to Deland, Florida, in the early 1950's. A cousin Bernard Norman "Bernie" Rabbitt and his wife Grace Rosalee Hurley Rabbitt also settled in Deland, FL around the same time. Florence and Grace were best friends growing up. Melvin was a master gardener. He always had a Farmer's Almanac that he would read and follow. He had a backyard full of orange and satsuma trees, and vegetables. He had bird-houses and fed the birds. He had a porch off his house where he would smoke King Edward cigars and watch Old Western shows to keep the smell and noise out of the main house. He loved to fish, and would take a grandson fishing. He also was not afraid to put that grandson to work on chores around the house, and would inspect the windows cleaned with vinegar and newspaper to make sure they were near perfect. He was extremely frugal, and though he retired in his early 50's, he left a large sum (over $100,000 in 2017 dollars) to each of his 5 adult children when he passed. He was living proof that it isn't how much you make, but how much you save. Family oral accounts said they were married 26 Mar 1918, but it was 1919 according to The Baltimore Sun (Baltimore, MD) Sun 27 Mar 1919 page 11 col. 5 under Marriage Licenses says "Marion M. Bogley" he is 21 and that she is 20. In reality he is only 18, and she is 21. In 1919 it was against Maryland law for men younger than 21 to get married. The paper spells Florence Kingman's last name wrong or it was submitted incorrectly, spells her last name as KUIGMAN. Melvin and Florence were married 26 Mar 1919 in Baltimore, MD by the Rev. James M. Wallace, Pastor, perhaps in a home, but most likely not in the Church, as a search of records of the Church shows no marriage nor Church membership of either Melivin or Florence. When the Pastor Wallace passed away his wife kept her husband's records, and so the Church has none. [Marriage Certificate in my possession---see also Baltimore City Court of Common Pleas (Marriage Record) for Marion Melvin Bogley and Florence Kingman, Baltimore City, 26 Mar 1919 [MSA CM206-39; CR 71,410, Folio 17]. Official Marriage Certificate lists "Marvin M. Begley" and Florence Kingman, so this is another reason why previous Marriage Certificate searches were unable to be found.
