Description	:	Marion Vander Linden, 93, of Pella, Iowa, passed away on May 4, 2017, at The Cottages in Pella. Marion was born on February 19, 1924, to Carl and Nellie (Dahm) Vander Linden near Leighton, Iowa. He attended Black Oak Center School through the second grade and then enrolled in Peoria Christian School when his family moved to the Peoria, Iowa area. In January of 1943, Marion enlisted in the United States Navy. Marion was born on February 19, 1924, to Carl and Nellie (Dahm) Vander Linden near Leighton, Iowa. He attended Black Oak Center School through the second grade and then enrolled in Peoria Christian School when his family moved to the Peoria, Iowa area. In January of 1943, Marion enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country during World War II in the Pacific theater aboard the destroyer, the USS Hopewell, from May of 1943 through January of 1946. During that time, the Hopewell saw eight major engagements including the Battle at Corregidor. He was honorably discharged in February of 1946. On March 11, 1950, he married Marilyn De Young. Together they farmed in the Peoria area and raised their six children. Marion retired from farming at age 65 and then worked for a number of years as a driver for Ulrich Motors in Pella. He and Marilyn left the farm and moved to Pella in 1998. Marion was active in the community, serving two terms as an Elder in the Peoria Christian Reformed Church consistory, as well as on the boards of both the Peoria Christian Elementary School and the Pella Christian High School. An avid sports fan and particularly devoted to the Brooklyn Dodgers, “Bummy” was himself an athlete, pitching for a number of local softball teams until he hung up his glove at age 42. Marion is survived by his wife Marilyn (De Young) Vander Linden of Pella; his children: Michael Vander Linden of Pella, Merry (Claudio Vacas) Vander Linden of Traverse City, Michigan, Marlys Vander Linden of Shipshewana, Indiana, Marshall (Sharla De Ruyter) Vander Linden of Clive, Iowa, Melanie (Scott) Rutgers Omaha, Nebraska, and Mark Vander Linden of Urbandale, Iowa; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Logan (Tamara) Vander Linden and their three children: Nadirah, Diyari and Zaid, Harmony (Rebecca Nelson) Linden and children: Zoey Linden-Cadd and Ruby Linden-Nelson, Travis Vander Linden, Kaitlin (Nathan) Mowry, Hannah Rutgers; his sister, Jennie Wilting of Edmonton, Canada; and sisters-in-law: Faye De Jong of Wenatchee, Washington and Wilma Nibbelink of Iowa City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Henry, Cornie, and Andrew Vander Linden; his sisters: Catherine De Jong and Stella Halstedt; his parents-in-law, John and Wilma (De Jong) De Young; two sisters-in-law, Janice Brodsky and Jean Tewinkle and a brother-in-law, Dale De Young.
