Description	:	We celebrate the life of Marjorie Elaine Schrag, who was born Nov. 11, 1919 in Peabody, Kan., to Loring and Edith (Barber) Sawtelle. Marge graduated from the University of Wichita and from St. Francis Hospital School of Medical Technology in August 1941, one of the few women in the field at the time. Read More	We celebrate the life of Marjorie Elaine Schrag, who was born Nov. 11, 1919 in Peabody, Kan., to Loring and Edith (Barber) Sawtelle. Marge graduated from the University of Wichita and from St. Francis Hospital School of Medical Technology in August 1941, one of the few women in the field at the time. Her early work was in hospitals in Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana, and Kansas. Marge married LeRoy V. Kaufman on September 12, 1942. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters, Crystal and Cindy. Marge worked in the medical practice that LeRoy started with his brother Irvin in Freeman, SD. LeRoy passed away suddenly in June 1954. Marge married Palmer Schrag on October 18, 1956, a union that lasted more than 55 years until his death in 2012. The family welcomed a son, Richard, in 1958. Having set up the medical technology lab for the Freeman Community Hospital when it opened, Marge continued to run the lab for the next 27 years. She was a member of the American Society of Clinical Laboratory Science, serving as president of the Kansas state society group and in board positions for the South Dakota state society group of that organization. She served on the advisory board at Mitchell Vo-Tech in their school for laboratory assistants, and on the consortium for Project Safari, a continuing education program from the University of South Dakota. Marge served on the School Board for Freeman High School for nine years, three as board president. She found joy as a volunteer in many community activities, including as a member of the Dorcas Society since 1953, delivering Meals on Wheels for more than 30 years, as treasurer of the Hospital Auxiliary for more than 20 years, and as an activities volunteer for the FRHS nursing home. Marge was an active member of Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, teaching Sunday School and serving on many committees for the church and for Mennonite Women. Marge passed away Friday, February 10, 2017 at the Oakview Terrace nursing home (Freeman Regional Health Services) at the age of 97. Cherishing her memory and mourning her passing are her daughter Crystal (Larry) Underwood of Goshen, IN; their children Teresa (Todd) Miller of Pepper Pike, OH; Mark Underwood of San Juan, PR; and Christina Underwood of Goshen, IN; her daughter Cindy (Tom) Zeiser of Buffalo, WY; her children Jeremy (Elizabeth) Thies of Moraga, CA; Jennifer Thies (Ryan Lutz) of Wheatridge, CO; and Joshua Thies (Trudy Proctor) of Longmont, CO; her son Richard (Roxanne) Schrag of Dallas, TX and their sons Steven of Phildelphia, PA and Michael of Albuquerque, NM; great-grandchildren Austin Underwood; Natasha Thies, Felix and Hugo Lutz; Jacob Underwood; Iris and Nadia Miller; Lillian, Isabel, and James Thies; and Genevieve Thies; her nephews Loring and Bob DuBois; niece Barb (DuBois) Lane; and a host of other family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Mary (Sawtelle) Dubois, her husband LeRoy Kaufman, her husband Palmer Schrag, and her grandchild Tim Underwood.
