Read More	Marjorie Smalley, daughter of Robert and Matilda (Haase) Hess, was born September 7, 1921 in Paton Township in Greene County, Iowa, and departed this life January 18, 2010 at the Greene County Long Term Care Center in Jefferson, Iowa. She lived her life to the age of 88 years, 4 months and 18 days. Marjorie attended school in Paton and then graduated with the Class of 1939 from Dana High School. Marjorie was married to Clifton Dean Smalley at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They had four children. In 1941, Dean and Marjorie began farming in Boone and Greene Counties. In 1955, they bought a farm 3 miles northeast of Paton, and the family moved to that farm in 1956. Marjorie and Dean built and moved to a home in Paton in 1975. Marjorie worked alongside Dean on the farm spending many hours doing fieldwork and loading and hauling wagons. She especially enjoyed raising geese and chickens as well as spending time in her garden. Her love of gardening continued with her flowers when she moved to town. Marjorie and Dean enjoyed attending the children and grandchildrens' music and sports events. They also enjoyed Girl's State Basketball Tournaments, Neighborhood Card Club, bowling and the "Sufonet's" (Former EUB Church couples) gatherings. They wintered in Texas for many years, and their travels included a Caribbean Cruise, Hawaii, Canary Islands, Africa, Mexico, Canada and 40 of the continental states. While living near Beaver, Marjorie, Dean, and family were members of the Church of Brethren in Beaver. Marjorie was baptized as an infant in the Evangelical Church in Paton and later as an adult in the Beaver Brethren Church. After moving to the Paton area, the family became members of the Salem EUB Church in Paton which later united with the Methodist to become the Paton Salem United Methodist Church. Marjorie was active in mission groups in all three churches she attended, helped head up funeral dinners, taught Sunday School and helped lead and make prizes for BINGO for Long Term Patients in Jefferson and was a historian. Surviving are daughters: Charlotte Dagit and husband, Raymond of Paton, Rosemary Klocksiem and husband, Dennis of Paton, Kathleen Swartz and husband, Harvey of Jefferson and son, Dennis and wife, Lora of Gowrie; 13 grandchildren: Rachelle Naeve, Rebecca Dagit, Roberta Thompson, Richard Dagit, Dale Klocksiem, Denise (Rory) Taylor, Jannette (Jeff) Thrane, Jackie Blair, Jodi Blair, Debra Pontius, Danille (Kent) Curtis, Darcy Smalley and Deonne (Jessie) Reed, 22 great-grand-children: Tyler & Derek Naeve, Sarah Sullivan, Alex and Ashley Thompson, Brandon & Bryce Dagit, Matt and Amie Taylor, Kalen and Colten Thrane, Shanice, Chantel, Taysia, and Corbin Blair and Kristen Blair, Logan, Lucas and Landon Pontius and Travis, Hannah and Grace Curtis and two great-great-grand-daughters, April and Jayde Naeve, two sisters; Irene Wenger of Boone and Arline (Lloyd) Robbins of Jefferson. The entire family gathers for reunions on Labor Day and Christmas. Those who preceded her in death were her parents, husband in 2008, a brother, Melvin; a sister, Evelyn Wenger and her husband, Rueben, and brother-in-law, Eldon Wenger. Funeral services were held Saturday, January 23, 2010, at 10:30 AM from the Salem United Methodist Church in Paton with Rev. David Arulnathan officiating. Interment was made in the Paton Cemetery. Musical selections, "Just as I Am" was sung by Danille Curtis, "Because He Lives" was sung by Doyle Carlson an Danille Curtis, the congregation sang "In the Garden" and "Hyman of Promise" and selections were accompanied by organist, Sally White. Casket bearers were Dale Klocksiem, Richard Dagit, Rory Taylor, Jeff Thrane, Kent Curtis and Jessie Reed.
