Marjorie Louise "Marj" Elkins was born on February 27, 1918, near Alta, Iowa, to Frank and Alma Nelson. The family included her sister, Harriett, who was just 14 months older than she, and a brother, John, who was four years younger than Marj. The family moved to Watertown, SD, when Marj was very young. She attended school in Watertown. When she was a junior at Watertown High School, she had her first date with Edwin F. ‘Bud’ Elkins, a young man who excelled at basketball, football and baseball for Watertown. Neither of them ever dated anyone else after that. Marj and Bud were married on August 14, 1939. Bud was a junior at Augustana College at the time. After he completed his education, he became a teacher and coach at Bridgewater, SD. A daughter, Cynthia (Cindy), was born to them while they were in Bridgewater. Bud went on to teach and coach in Clark, SD, and then Groton, SD. A second daughter, Hollis, joined the family while they were in Groton. In 1947 the family moved to Watertown where Bud joined a family business. During their years in Watertown, a son, Edwin Frank, Jr., and a daughter, Elyse, joined the family. In 1952 the family moved to Clark where Bud returned to his teaching and coaching career. In 1960 Marj took a job at the Clark office of Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. In 1972 Bud was offered a position at the Multi-District Vocational School in Watertown. Marj was able to transfer to Northwest Bell in Watertown, and so they moved back to the town where they had grown up. A few years after moving to Watertown, Marj and Bud built a house at Lake Kampeska. Both Marj and Bud retired in 1981. Marj was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Watertown. She was also a member of PEO, Elks Wives and Widows, and Red Hatters. Marj and Bud loved to dance and enjoyed membership in the Watertown Dance Club for many years. Marj was an excellent seamstress who made much of her own clothing plus many items for her daughters—including prom dresses and wedding dresses. Marj also loved to do crafting projects and belonged to an informal craft club with several dear friends. Bud died very suddenly in 2002. Marj moved to an apartment in Watertown where she continued to be involved in many activities. She enjoyed line dancing at the Watertown Senior Center until she was in her mid-nineties. She moved to Sioux Falls in 2013 so she could be close to family. Marj is survived by her daughter Cynthia (Glenn) Wika and son Ed Elkins, both of Sioux Falls, and her daughter Elyse Elkins of Rio Rancho, NM. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kevin Wika, Kent Wika, Dana Rowe, Melanie Van Den Bosch, Natalie Frazier and Brent Elkins plus 11 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Also surviving are her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Nelson, and many dear nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother and sister, and her dear daughter Hollis. - Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel
