"Marj" was born in Council Grove, KS on Dec. 26, 1917, Preston J. & Ora J. (Bennett) Baker. She graduated with the Council Grove Rural High School class of 1936. "Marj" was born in Council Grove, KS on Dec. 26, 1917, Preston J. & Ora J. (Bennett) Baker. She graduated with the Council Grove Rural High School class of 1936. She then attended the Hutchinson Business College. Marj was a life-long member of the Council Grove Methodist Church. On May 6, 1939, Marj and Ralph Emerson Deckard "eloped" and were married in the Baptist Parsonage in Kansas City, MO, not announcing their marriage until June 30, 1939. She was employed as the Deputy Morris County Clerk from 1961 until the mid-1970s at which time she was elected Morris County Clerk. She served in this office until her retirement in January 1981. Marj and Ralph enjoyed gardening, harvesting, canning and jelly making together. A favorite hobby for both was attending auctions. Marj's specialty was buying antique glassware and dishes. She displayed her large collection in their home. She was an excellent seamstress and, among family and friends, was known for her beautiful hand stitched quilts. Marj and Ralph loved to travel. After retirement they became "Winter Texans" where they resided in Donna, TX during the winter months. They were part of a local Morris County group of "Snow-birds" residing in Palm Shadows RV Park. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her grandson-in-law, James Owensby; and four brothers: Harold Baker, Warren Baker, Russell Baker and Bernard Baker. She is sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Dee Deckard; granddaughter, Jennyfer Owensby; and two great-grandsons, Payton and Joshua Owensby; all residing in Manhattan; two sisters-in-laws, Shirley Baker of Council Grove and Mary Baker of Dallas, TX; and many nieces, nephews and friends. A celebration of Marj's life will be held at a later date.
