Edgewood Journal 22 Apr 1915 Death Relieves Patient Sufferer Well Known Young Man Died Sunday Afternoon After Three Years of Great Suffering Mark Hamlett was born near Wood, Clayton County, Iowa, April 27, 1878, and departed this life Sunday, April 18, 1915, at the age of thirty-six years, eleven months, and eighteen days. He was united in marriage to Elva M. Culbertson January 2, 1901. To this union was born one daughter, Madge Oral, now a child of eleven years. With the exception of a few year spent in Nebraska and Missouri his life has been spent in the community where he was born. Everything was done that medical skill could contrive to prolong natural life, but he gradually grew worse until relieved by death. He bore his affliction, which were of nearly three years duration, with remarkable patience and fortitude, and a short time ago he became reconciled to God's will and willing and ready to go to his reward. His condition for weeks and months had been one of entire helplessness. During this time his faithful companion has been his constant attendant, never giving a thought of self, but patiently endeavoring by her constant and devoted care, to nurse back to health the husband whose presence she will sorely miss. Some years ago he became convinced of the idea of furnishing protection for his loved ones and accordingly entered the Modern Woodman Lodge. He was also a member of the Masonic Order and the Eastern Star. He leaves to mourn his death a devoted wife, one daughter, an aged father, four brothers and one sister, all of whom were present at the bedside at the time of his departure. A host of relatives and friends wish to extend their sympathy in this time of sorrow. May the kind and loving hand of the Father, who doeth all things for our good, tenderly sustain the bereaved family and lead them on through the valley until the day breaks and the shadows flee away. Funeral services were held at the home Monday afternoon, the funeral being under the auspices of the Masonic Order. Rev. Heiserman preached the funeral sermon, interment taking place in the Edgewood Cemetery. Edgewood Journal 03 June 1915 Mrs. Elva Hamlett has received a check for $1,000 from the Modern Woodman of America in full payment of the policy carried by her husband, Mr. Mark Hamlett. She feels grateful to the company for their promptness and satisfactory settlement of the policy. Also for the courtesies extended by Maple Leaf Camp. It has only been six weeks since Mr. Hamlett's death and thus it will be seen that the matter was disposed of quickly. The Woodman is a good organization in which to carry insurance cheaply.
