Mark was born August 9, 1961, in Columbus, Nebraska to Erwin and Betty(Louis) Hecker. He graduated from David City High School in 1979 and later earned an Associates Degree from Northeast Nebraska Community College. He entered law enforcement in Humphrey at the age of 19. Mark later worked for the David City Police force and joined the Sheriff's office in 1988. He has served as the Butler County Sheriff since 1999. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in David City, the Sheriff's Association of Nebraska, David City Rotary, Teammates, David City Booster Club and delivered Meals on Wheels. Mark was very devoted to his granddaughters and loved spending time with family. In his "spare time" he also served with Signal 88 at Husker games. He is survived by his mother, Betty Hecker of David City, five daughters; Tiffany(Dustin) Heins, David City, Staci(Shane) Anderson, Pierce, Kirby Hecker, Waverly, Rebecca Hecker, David City and Melanie Hecker of Omaha,a son Michael Beck of Grant, one sister, Peggy(Mike) Reese of Seward, two brothers; Steve Hecker of Norfolk, Mike(Jeanie) Hecker of Seward and his five granddaughters; Bella and Harlow Heins, Kenley and Kambree Anderson, Haelyn Holcomb, nieces and nephews and all his colleagues in law enforcement. He was preceded in death by his father, one son Jason Alexander and grandparents, George and Ethel Louis and Fred and Lena Hecker. *Kracl Funeral Chapels ------------------------------------------------- "Butler County sheriff remembered as caring, knowledgeable leader" DAVID CITY — Many people from Butler County and beyond its borders hoped and prayed for Mark Hecker. They hoped the Butler County sheriff would recover from a heart attack he suffered Friday. They learned Tuesday he didn’t make it. Hecker died Tuesday afternoon at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, according to Butler County Attorney Julie Reiter. She received the news from Hecker’s colleagues at the sheriff’s office. Hecker turned 53 on Saturday, a day after he drove himself to the Butler County Health Care Center. He was sent to Lincoln for care, then, as other complications arose, to UNMC. Hecker’s brother, Mike Hecker of Seward, said Monday the sheriff was critical but “resting comfortably." A “Prayers for Mark Hecker” Facebook page drew the attention of hundreds of friends and well-wishers. The page reported Monday that Hecker suffered significant damage to his heart and other organs. Reiter, who worked closely with the sheriff since she was elected in 2006, said she was fortunate to work with such a low-key person who knew how to diffuse a tense situation. Though Hecker will be missed by the community, she said he passed his knowledge and attitude on to his deputies. “I couldn’t have asked to have a better sheriff for starting in this office,” Reiter said. “He knew what he was doing.” Hecker was closing in on the end of his fourth term and running unopposed in the November general election. The Facebook comments poured in over the weekend, with many emphasizing Hecker’s service to the public and love for his family. He has five adult daughters. Hecker was a member of the Rotary Club of David City and, despite the demands of his job, he took his turn with other Rotarians delivering Wednesday Meals on Wheels to mostly elderly residents. He was also a dedicated Santa Claus for children's parties every holiday season. Although he was a sheriff to the public, they also knew him as a man dedicated to his children and the community. Hecker helped at the timing stand each track and field season. When teams brought home a state trophy in any activity, they could count on a law enforcement escort into town. On Tuesday, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office changed its Facebook profile photo to a blue stripe, a sign of mourning, and before long the same image was used by local fire departments, as well as individual firefighters and emergency responders. “The DCVFD pass our thoughts and prayers on to the Hecker family. Mark was a past member and of course we worked with him often. He was a leader that was always great to work with no matter what the situation. His shoes will be hard to fill and he will be greatly missed,” the David City Volunteer Fire Department posted. Another poster illustrated Hecker’s affinity for children. The man said his son, then 5, adored Hecker and copied everything he could, down to the mustache. The young boy thought he really was the sheriff and even pulled people over on his bicycle, according to the post. “And Mark made him feel like he was nothing less," the man wrote, referencing a time when the sheriff picked up the boy on his 5th birthday, giving him a hat, badge and honorary deputy certificate. “Our son, our family or our friends have never forgot Sheriff Hecker's kindness and that of his staff," the post read. Reiter said the sheriff's office staff met Monday, and Deputy Marcus Siebken, the department's canine handler, was the named the supervising deputy during Hecker's absence. Hecker grew up in the Surprise area. After graduating from David City High School, Hecker studied criminal justice for two years at what is now Northeast Community College in Norfolk before joining the David City Police Department at 19. When 36-year Sheriff Leo Meister announced he was retiring in 1998, Hecker, then the chief deputy, pursued the job, winning the election over David City Police Chief Steve Sunday, who originally hired Hecker. Aside from a close primary challenge by former Chief Deputy Tom Dozler in 2006, Hecker was unopposed in his other campaigns. During Hecker’s first term, he and the county board of supervisors designed a new annex for the county jail that opened in 2004. The 28-bed detention center began accepting out-of-county prisoners and housing female prisoners, who were previously lodged outside the county. Hecker also oversaw the instillation of the office's canine unit and helped develop a contract for law enforcement services in David City, which allowed the city to dissolve the David City Police Department. The sheriff’s office began working in David City in November 2012.
