Vigil service is 7 p.m. Friday at Tennant Funeral Home. Foxhoven, 70, of Sterling, had been a major figure in the Sterling business community since the 1940s. He was born Sept. 30, 1921, in Fleming to Michael and Mary Jacoby Foxhoven. The Foxhovens and their seven children farmed in the Fleming area until 1936, when drought and the Great Depression caused them to move to a farm five miles south of Sterling. In 1939 the Foxhovens moved to Sterling and Michael Foxhoven bought a service station. Mark Foxhoven married Mary Hagerty June 10, 1946, in Sterling. She died Oct. 3, 1987. Michael Foxhoven died in January 1945 while Mark was working in Denver. Mark returned to Sterling to run the service station and was joined by his brother, Joe, when he left the armed forces. A short time later they bought the Sinclair bulk operation and in 1955 bought half interest in the Texaco bulk plant. About the same time the brothers purchased property at 1100 West Main St., remodeled the building, and opened a tire and appliance store. The Foxhovens then immediately arranged for the purchase of two lots east of their property and built a service station, which opened in 1956. After a February 1963 fire, a new store, along with a 10,000 square foot warehouse and cafe, was built. It opened in November 1963. As the interstate highway system was completed in 1969, Foxhovens completed service stations and cafes at the Crook and Atwood interchanges. Foxhoven Bros. operated those stations along with two downtown stations. Foxhovens next ventures were tire and appliance stores in Yuma and Holyoke. Later the Holyoke store was closed and a store in Fort Morgan was opened. Later the interstate service stations were leased to other opera tors with Foxhovens Inc. still servicing the stations through the Texaco bulk plant. In 1978 a 5,000-square foot building was erected on the north side of the tire shop parking lot on West Main tohouse a Bandag tire recapping operation. Mr. Foxhoven was a member of St.Anthony's Catholic Church, Sterling Country Club, Rocky Mountain Tire Dealers Association, a 49-year honorary member of Knights of Columbus, and a lifetime member of Sterling Elks Lodge No. 1336. Survivors include two daughters, Martha Foxhoven of Denver and Kathryn Foxhoven of Lakewood; two sons, Michael of Camarillo, Calif., and David of Denver; four brothers, Ivo and Joseph of Sterling, Msgr. Rev. Omer Foxhoven of Wheat Ridge, and Wilfred of Fort Morgan; two sisters, Mary Jayne Benton of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Olive Berg of Portland, Ore.; and two grandchildren. Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Contributions can be made in his name to St. Anthony's School Fund. Out of respect to Mr. Foxhoven, at least six businesses Foxhovens Texaco Interstate, Hasty Mart, Texaco Petroleum, Fox hovens Cafe, Foxhovens Inc., and Foxhovens in Yuma will be closed Saturday.
