Description	:	Mark Titterington is my third great Grandfather. Mark Titterington was born in Bolton England to a family that worked in the textile industry in that city. From records we have found that his father was John Titterington Senior and his mother was Mary (Parkinson). Only two other siblings are known at this time, William and John. Read More	Mark Titterington is my third great Grandfather. Mark Titterington was born in Bolton England to a family that worked in the textile industry in that city. From records we have found that his father was John Titterington Senior and his mother was Mary (Parkinson). Only two other siblings are known at this time, William and John. He was baptized 21 September in Bolton. 15 September 1829 he set sail out of Liverpool on the Shenandoah for the United States. By this time he was a skilled Craftsman in the same industry his parents were in. He arrived in Alexandria, District of Columbia 1 of November 1829. By 1837 he was in Indiana where he was employed by the Cockefair Woolen Mill located on Ely's Creek in Union County, Indiana. This was the largest Woolen mill West of the Allegheny Mountains until after the Civil War. In an article was written before the Cockefair Mill we found the following: " On the first floor or top of the basement were the looms that wove the cloth. One, a fancy loom still stood with its dust grimed moth eaten partly woven pattern still threaded through the batten. This fancy loom was one of the first of its kind to be brought to Indiana. A fancy loom is one on which figured patterns of all kinds can be woven. This piece of machinery was one which wove the principal part of the cloth for the farmers. The farmers would select his design from the factory samples or would plan one exclusively for himself. The loom was presided over by an old "Scotsman" who was an employee of the firm for over a quarter of a century. Not every weaver in those days could manipulate a fancy loom and some weavers were better than others at any state. The old Scotsman Sylvanus referred to might have been the English weaver Benjamin Ainsworth, living next door to the Cockefair, or MARK TITTERINGTON, another English weaver living nearby. Until comparatively recent times Hoosiers have been a bit cavalier in their designations of nationality. Mark and Ainsworth both ran the fancy loom that stood 3 stories high. On the coverlet's woven by the mill, if you find a Scottish Thistle in the design, this was Mark's "Signature" that he was the one that wove that piece.. Mark married Anna Lemmon on 3 August 1840; then he married Maria Ann Scholl in 20 March 1851 in Dunlapsville, Liberty, Union, Indiana, USA. His children with Anna were: JOhn W., William, Mary Ellen, Joshua and Anna. When Anna was born, Mark's wife Anna died. Unable to care for the tiny baby, farm, work the mill and rear his other children, Anna was allowed to be Adopted by a childless couple, Alfred and Elizabeth Burke. According to census records, Anna Burke was always aware who her birth parent were by stating her father was born in England. Mark's children with Maria Schull were: Lemmon, George, Sarah and Rachel. George is my 2nd great grandfather. The photo of Mark as seen on this memorial was taken when he had his wife went to England in probably the 1880's. It is unknown if this was his only trip back to the land of his birth or not. He was naturalized and his papers are found in The Union County Courthouse.
