Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning, April 24 beginning at 10:30 AM at the Colome School gymnasium. Marlan Keith Larsen was born ten miles south of Winner, SD on October 10, 1928 to Jens and Martha (Koeppe) Larsen. He attended country school west of Colome and Colome High School. Marlan graduated from Colome High School in 1946. He farmed with his father in the Colome area. Marlan and Maxine Bertram were married on June 29 1949 in Colome. Three sons were born to the couple. The family lived and grew on farms southeast of Colome. Marlan worked part time for Frescoln and Randall Elevator, Bjornsen Oil and Poler Welding in addition to his farming activities. He also worked part time with the Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) and the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation (FCIC). Marlan retired from farming in 1990 and became more active in working with the FCIC, Blakely Agency, RCIS/Wells Fargo and the new Farm Services Administration (FSA). He continued part time work with FSA until his death. A special joy in his life was planting trees and grooming the lawn around the home. In addition to raising his family and teaching three sons the valuable lessons of farm management, Marlan was an avid hunter and fisherman. He bagged at least one deer a year from 1950 until 2009 and had many "big bucks" in his sights. Deer hunting expeditions took him to the Black Hills, Wyoming, Bennett County, Harding County and all areas of south central South Dakota. In his early hunting days he was also well known for shooting rabbits, fox, coyotes, geese and turkeys. While the sons were growing up Marlan spent many rewarding days taking the boys bass fishing on area stock ponds. After getting his first tast of walleye, however, Marlan's fishing emphasis changed and he made the trek to the Missouri River several times each month to catch walleye.
