Description	:	Marlene Louise (nee Kriens) Sunds was born May 8, 1938 at home on a farm northwest of Fontanelle, Iowa, to Elmer & Geraldine (Anderson) Kriens. She passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021 at her home in Guthrie Center, Iowa. After the sudden passing of Marlene's father at age 2, Geraldine moved to Fontanelle. Marlene attended Fontanelle Public School, graduating in May of 1956. Marlene was a member of the First Congregational Church in Fontanelle and was baptized as a young girl. Read More	Marlene Louise (nee Kriens) Sunds was born May 8, 1938 at home on a farm northwest of Fontanelle, Iowa, to Elmer & Geraldine (Anderson) Kriens. She passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021 at her home in Guthrie Center, Iowa. After the sudden passing of Marlene's father at age 2, Geraldine moved to Fontanelle. Marlene attended Fontanelle Public School, graduating in May of 1956. Marlene was a member of the First Congregational Church in Fontanelle and was baptized as a young girl. She taught Bible School and attended Sunday School. After graduation, Marlene went to Des Moines, Iowa and worked at Look Magazine, living at the YWCA (the job was offered due to Marlene's basketball skills). Marlene married her best friend, Warren Eugene Sunds, of Casey, Iowa on April 6, 1957, at the Congregational Church in Fontanelle. They lived in Des Moines until Warren enlisted in the U.S. Army. Upon returning from service, they went in partnership with Warren's parents farming and raising Hereford cattle north of Casey, Iowa. In 1979, they started a new business, Sunds Custom Fencing, building a new home north of Casey, where they continued to build their business for 20 years. After Warren's diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, they sold the business in 1999. Marlene enjoyed working with wood and had a refinishing shop in her home, refinishing many beautiful antiques for others and also all of her family. Marlene became Warren's caregiver for 18 years, and they moved to Guthrie Center in September of 2008. Marlene joined St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, Iowa and was a member for over 50 years, being active member of Lutheran Women's Missionary League (LWML), Sunday School teacher, and she and Warren were youth counselors for 15 years. Warren and Marlene were Godparents for 16 children. Warren passed away on December 1, 2011, and Marlene became active in many volunteer areas including serving on the Guthrie County Hospital Foundation board, the Royal Neighbors of America, continued her membership at St. John's Lutheran Church in Casey, as well as many other volunteer activities. Marlene is survived by her children, Martin Montgomery and wife Dr. Beth Ann (Larson) Sunds of Van Meter, Iowa; Colonel (US Army retired) Benett Paul and wife Shannon (Jipp) Sunds of Shawnee, Kansas; and Carrie Beth (Sunds) and husband Timothy O'Brien of Lake Panorama, Panora, Iowa; Grandchildren, Haley Jean (Sunds) Burgraff (Taylor) of Shoreview, Minnesota; Jared Warren (fiancé Baley Good) Sunds of Carlisle, Iowa; Jessica Marie Sunds of State College, Pennsylvania; Garrett Christian Sunds of Wichita, Kansas; Sierra Kriens O'Brien and Saige Danae O'Brien of Lake Panorama, Panora; Great-grandchild, Theodore Warren Burgraff of Shoreview, Minnesota; sister, Mardelle (Oliver) Sorensen of Bridgewater, Iowa; sister-in-law, Darlene Sunds Bassett of Casey; niece, Janell Sorensen (Rick) Stender; nephews, Robert Sorensen, Doug (Lani) Bassett, David (Michelle) Bassett, Gregory (Pam) Bassett, Scott (Agniezka) White, Alan (Melanie) Warner; nieces, Glenda Warner (Jack Findley), Brenda (LeRoy) Simmons, and many cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Warren of 54 years, parents Elmer & Geraldine; step-fathers Walter John Bauer and Ivan Sickels; infant step-sister Mary Elizabeth Bauer; grandparents Charles & Anna Kriens and Peter & Cora Anderson; step-grandmother Elizabeth Bauer; sisters-in-law Marilyn Warner and Kay (White) Olson; nephew Randy White; brothers-in-law Merle Bassett, Dick White, Don Warner, and Roy Olson. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Friday, December 17, 2021 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Casey, Iowa. Burial will be in Dalmanutha Cemetery, near Guthrie Center. Visitation will be Thursday, December 16, 2021 from 4-7 P.M. at the Twigg Funeral Home, Guthrie Center.
