Read More	Marlene Phyllis (Merz) Long was born November 8th, 1937, in rural Smith County, Kan., to Phillip and Edna (Schoen) Merz. She departed this life on August 26, 2020 at the age of 82, after a short battle with cancer. Marlene’s grade school years were spent at a nearby country school and she then attended Downs High School, graduating with the Class of 1955. Marlene was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) Long on June 7, 1959. This union was blessed with three children, James (Jim) Robert, Linda Kay, and Janet Sue. In 1962, they moved to their farm north of Downs where they raised their children, spent many nights with grandchildren and loved every part of farm life. In 2007, due to declining health and the "push" from their children to move closer, Bob and Marlene moved into Downs. They were blessed to spend 54 years of marriage together, until Bob passed away on August 29, 2013. Marlene was a baptized and confirmed member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Downs. She was an active member serving as the organist, Sunday school teacher and youth group leader. Marlene was also involved in Aid Association of Lutherans and served as an officer in Lutheran Women in Mission League. Marlene was a devoted farm wife and the most loving and caring mom and grandmother. The love she had for family was demonstrated in so many ways. She was a homemaker, avid cook and took pride in the family farm. She spent many hours outside tending to her beautiful yard, flowers, garden and assisting Bob in many ways on the farm. From moving cattle, chopping musk thistle to roughing milo, she was always eager to lend a helping hand. Marlene was a fantastic cook, preparing some of the finest meals and baked goods for her family to enjoy. Even though harvest meals were not her favorite thing to do, she did it with love and sometimes six grandkids in tow. After her three children were raised, Marlene took on many part-time jobs outside of the home. She loved taking care of the children at Mothers Day Out, was a clerk at Stigge Villa, and worked as a Home Health Aide. Marlene was the most loving and caring mother, and grandmother. She was blessed with six grandchildren, whom she adored. Whether it was working on 4-H projects or teaching them how to cook and sew. Marlene and the kids always enjoyed spending time together. Sleepovers at grandma and grandpa’s with the cousins were not uncommon and done often. The smell of fresh baked cookies and cinnamon rolls were always a favorite. There was not an activity, event, birthday or special occasion ever missed. Seven great-grandchildren were welcomed and blessed her home. There was always a lot of laughter, smiles and “I Love You’s” exchanged. She looked forward to these visits as they brightened her days. Be Strong & Courageous! Marlene was a strong woman who never complained, a faithful woman who loved God and her family, and a hard working soul. She was the best Mom and Granny anyone could have ever asked for, and will be so dearly missed. Left to morn her passing are her children, Jim Long of New Cambria, Linda (Donald) Miller of Downs, Janet Carl of Downs; grandchildren: Jeremy (Katie) Long of rural Portis, Julie (Derek) deGraff of Shawnee, Captain Gregory Miller, US Army Stationed in South Korea, Kerry (Brent) Schoen of Downs, and Nicole Carl of Osborne; great grandchildren: Ada and Cora Long, Elijah and Jocelyn deGraff, and Colson, Kensley and Kirby Schoen. She is also survived by her siblings: Dale (Zelda) Merz, of Atwood, Vernon (Linda) Merz of Cape Coral, Fla., and Elaine Gleason of San Tan Valley, Ariz.; and sister-in-law, Shirley Merz of Lincoln, Neb. She is preceded in death by her husband Robert, grandson Grady Carl, parents Phillip and Edna Merz and brother, LaVerl Merz. Funeral services will be held, Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Downs with Pastor James Toombs officiating. The organist was Linda Groenendyk, who accompanied the congregation in singing “Amazing Grace”, “Precious Lord Take My Hand, “ and “How Great Thou Art.” Pastor Dave Hutson sang and accompanied himself as his guitar singing, “I’m But A Stranger Here, Heaven Is My Home” and “I Love To Tell The Story.” Pallbearers were Jeremy Long, Brent Schoen, Derek deGraff, Terry Long, Matthew Long, and Doug Merz. Honorary pallbearer was Captain Gregory Miller. She was laid to rest in the South Oak Creek Cemetery, next to her husband and grandson Grady. Pastor Dave Hutson sang “Just As I Am” and “On Eagle’s Wings” at the cemetery. Memorials may be given to Solomon Valley Hospice or the South Oak Creek Cemetery.
