Marlyn Gene Topp was born June 10, 1922, the second son of Ernest and Elsie (Kuhfus) Topp, on their family's farm in Sherman Township in rural Hardin County. He attended Radcliffe High School, graduating salutatorian in 1939. In 1944 Marlyn was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines until 1946. Marlyn Gene Topp was born June 10, 1922, the second son of Ernest and Elsie (Kuhfus) Topp, on their family's farm in Sherman Township in rural Hardin County. He attended Radcliffe High School, graduating salutatorian in 1939. In 1944 Marlyn was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines until 1946. He was united in marriage to Ruth Augusta Kappelman on June 12, 1948 at Rockwood Lutheran Church in Rockwood, Wisconsin, and soon after took over the farm from his father. Marlyn enjoyed farming until his retirement in 1989 when Marlyn and Ruth moved to town in Hubbard, Iowa Marlyn was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Hubbard, serving as an elder, high school Bible class teacher, Walther League sponsor, men's club member, and participated in the church's dart ball league. He is perhaps best known in the community for being a skilled baseball player for his high school team, as well as the Sherman Township and American Legion teams. One of Marlyn's final great memories was seeing his beloved Cubs win the World Series. Marlyn passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at the Hubbard Care Center. Preceding him in death are his parents, wife Ruth, and older brother Wade Topp. Remaining behind to cherish his memory are his three daughters, Virginia and husband DuWayne Federwitz of Clintonville, WI; Linda Wegner of Ames, IA; Carol and husband Peter Worland of Los Alamos, NM; and son Robert and wife Lori of Hubbard, IA; grandchildren Darla (Federwitz) Beckwith, Douglas Federwitz, Philip, Abby, and Sarah Worland, Jacob, Martin, and Samantha Topp, three step grandchildren Denise (Federwitz) Cesar, Dennis Federwitz, and Dorie (Federwitz) Daharash, four great-grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews, and friends.
