Douglas, 84, of 409 Broad Street, died Saturday afternoon at a nursing home in Newton following an extended illness. Services at the James-Schalinske Funeral Home. Interment in Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman. The son of Jerome and Olive Gardner Douglas, he was born May 9, 1881, at Palo, Iowa. He moved with his parents to Newton at an early age and received his education in the Newton public schools. When he was 15 his parents moved to Grinnell and he was employed by the Rock Island Railroad as a messenger. At age 19 he served as a telegrapher with the railroad at Anita, but returned to Grinnell as a ticket agent and later as agent for the railroad. In 1940 he was transferred to Newton and served as an agent there until his retirement in 1948. Following retirement the family moved to Grinnell. He married Nelle M. Ingraham on October 23, 1907 at the Congregational parsonage in Marshalltown. Nelle and Marlyn were the parents of two children, Mary Jane of Grinnell, and Robert W. of Willingboro, N.J. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and a past member of the Elks, Knights of Pythias, and Kiwanis. In addition to his wife and two children, he is survived by two granddaughters, Joan Carol, and Judith Ann, and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, and one brother.
