Marlys Louise Magnus was born at Webster, South Dakota on Tuesday, August 23, 1922, she was the only child of William and Pauline (Lena) Magnus and the granddaughter of Martha Magnus, one of the area's last surviving early pioneers. She grew up in Webster and graduated from Webster High School. She lived her entire life in Webster, except for a year spent in California where she met Kenneth Callen, a soldier from Missouri stationed in Santa Monica. He went to war and she returned to South Dakota. In 1945, after the war, he returned to South Dakota and they were married on December 9, 1945, a marriage that lasted until his death in 1988. Marlys held a variety of jobs in Webster, including working at Halbkat's Drug Store, the telephone company, the Webster Café, as office assistant to Dr. William Duncan, and she sewed at Dakotah, Inc. For a number of years after the death of her husband, she served as a volunteer at the Prairie Museum. She also sewed for the St. John's Lutheran Church quilt project. She has resided at Sun Dial Manor in Bristol for the past three years. Marlys passed away on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at Bristol, South Dakota at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 2 days. She is survived by a daughter, Paulette Callen of New York, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
