Kelly, pioneer shoe dealer, who had been identified with business life of Carroll for nearly 45 years, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home, 715 North Carroll street, at 2:30 Monday afternoon. Mr. Kelly had been in ill health for about four years and worse during the past two weeks. His age was 69 years. The body is being returned late this afternoon from the Dietrich Funeral Home to the family residence, to rest until the time of the rites. Services are to be held at 9 o'clock Thursday morning at the St. Lawrence church, with the Rev. A.J. Poeckes offering the requiem mass. Burial will be in the Carroll Cemetery. Marquis Joseph Kelly, known to his friends as "Joe", was born at Vail, Iowa Feb 16, 1873, a son of John and Bridget Kelly. He attended the parochial school at Denison and the Denison normal college, graduating from the later in 1889. The next year he took employment in a clothing store at Denison. During 1891 and '92 he worked in a shoe store there. In 1892, Mr. Kelly entered upon his career as a shoe merchant, going into business with his brother, Thomas at Denison. This relationship as part owner and operator with his brother continued for 4 years. In 1896 Mr. Kelly and his brother opened a shoe store in Carroll. Three years later, Mr. Kelly became sole owner and manager of this pioneer concern. One by one, as his sons completed their schooling, they joined Mr Kelly in the shoe firm. His oldest son, Louis J. is now owner and proprieter of the Kelly Shoe Store here; his second son, Clayton J. is owner and propreitor of the shoe store which was opened in Rockwell City a number of years ago; and his son-in-law, Otmar J Bernholtz is owner and propreitor of the Economy Shoe store here, which was in charge of Mr. Kelly's youngest son Robert H. until he joined the army air corps. Because of his declining health, Mr Kelly retired from an active business in 1940. Oct. 25, 1905, Mr Kelly was married at St. Joseph's Church here to Miss Mary Guthrie, a member of one of Carroll's pioneer families. Surviving with his wife are his are this three sons: Louis J., Carroll; Clayton J, Rockwell City; and Robert J. stationed at Columbus, Miss., one daughter, Mrs. Otmar Bernholtz (Winifred), and two grandsons: Joseph Bernholtz of Carroll and John Michael Kelly of Rockwell City. He also leaves four sisters: Mrs. Mary Garvey and Miss Kathryn Kelly, Rapid City, S.D.; Mrs. Kempton Jeffery, Red Owl, S.D.; and Mrs. Alfred Wright, Denison; and one brother, Thomas Kelly, Boone. Another brother, Henry, preceded him in death. Mr. Kelly was a member of the St. Lawrence Church. He belonged to Charles Carroll Council No. 780 Knights of Columbus. As long as his health permitted, Mr. Kelly took an active part in the civic life of Carroll. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce and a past director of the Rotary Club. He was one of a small group of men that organized the Carroll Gas Company here about thirty years ago. In the days of the Carroll County Fair, Mr. Kelly had served as a member of the board of directors, having held t e office from 1925 to 1935. Robert J. Kelly, who is with the army air corps at Columbus, Miss., will arrive home tomorrow morning, called by the death of his father, M.J. Kelly.
