Jefferson Bee - Wednesday, March 17, 1909 - The death of Marcina Harriott, an old citizen of Greene county, took place last Friday, March 12, in the hospital, at Carroll, where he had gone for treatment. Mr. Harriott, for many years, lived in the Churdan neighborhood, and later purchased what is known as the Fred Peters place in Grant township. He resided there several years and then sold the tract and moved to Missouri. The south did not seem to agree with him and he returned here a couple of years ago and bought a farm north of Glidden or rather in the edge of Greene county. Mr. Harriott was a member of Company K, of the 11th Iowa Infantry, and served four years in the interests of his country during the Civil war. Mr. Harriott was born in Trumbull county, Ohio, December 27, 1837, and was, at the time of his death, a little past 71 years of age. He came to Iowa at the age of 19 years and two years later, on September 14, 1858, was married to Miss Caroline Latimer, they celebrating their fiftieth wedding anniversary last fall. He was the father of eight children, two of whom died in infancy. Besides his good wife, who survives him, the following children are left to mourn for him: Calvin W. Harriott, of Lake City, Mrs. Ella Umbaugh, of Ralston, Emory E. Harriott, of Churdan, Mrs. Francis Roberts and Mrs. Nellie Buswell, of Jefferson, and Jesse, who has been at home. The funeral took place last Sunday, and the remains, laid away in the Mount Hope cemetery in Carroll county. The following tribute has been handed The Bee by Mr. John Wilkinson: As a friend and comrade of Marcina Harriott, I wish to state to the readers of The Bee, that in him we have lost a brave soldier, one who responded to the first call of his country for 300,000 men, and after the surrender of Vicksburg re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer for three years, or during the war. He served his country well, participating in all the battles in which his brigade (which was the famous Crocker Iowa Brigade) engaged. Comrade Herriott was a brave soldier, a true man to his friends, a loyal citizen, a loving husband, and a kind father. We soldiered almost four years, together marching and fighting side by side, and I will say, "Farewell, my friend; in your death we of the 'Sixties' are reminded that it won't be long until we too must answer the last roll call."
