Description	:	Marshall Beck, 73, of Lexington, formerly of Minden, died Thursday, March 23, 2006, at Tri-County Hospital in Lexington. Services were held at Minden Evangelical Free Church with the Rev. Jerry Classen officiating. Burial was with military honors by Minden American Legion and Heartwell Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife; son, Tom of Wichita, Kan.; daughters, Lorraine Loschen of Worland, Wyo., and Audrey Racek of Lexington; and brothers, Richard and Don of Minden, and Hilly of Springfield, Mo. Additional survivors include sons-in-law, Cornell Loschen of Worland and Mike Racek of Lexington; daughter-in-law Laura of Wichita; grandchildren, Erin Loschen of Ogden, Utah, Jill Loschen of Laramie, Wyo., Schuyler Racek of Omaha, Betsy and Harrison Racek of Lexington, and Christian, Alex, Alyssa, Nicole, Madelyn and Jessica Beck of Wichita; sisters-in-law, Betty and Marion of Minden, Nadine of Springfield and Lois Beck of Ravenna; six nieces; five nephews; and numerous cousins. He attended rural School District 15 East Bell and Minden High School, graduating in 1950. He attended the University of Nebraska and Hastings College. He attended graduate school in administration at UNL and Kearney State College. He was active in sports in high school and college. He was a center on the 1949 Nebraska All-State Football Team and was a four-year letterman on the Hastings College football team. In 1953, he was drafted into the Army and served two years in Germany. He returned to Hastings College, earning his bachelor's degree in education in 1958. His first teaching and coaching position was in Geneva in 1958, and in 1960 the family moved to Gibbon where he taught and coached for seven years. In 1967 he began teaching and coaching in Minden. In 1971, he became Minden Public Schools athletic/activities director, replacing his former high school teacher and coach, Loren Kuper. He was active in the Nebraska Athletic Directors Association, serving in several offices including vice president and president. In 1992, he was named Nebraska athletic director of the year. He was an educator in Nebraska schools for 37 years. On June 15, 1995, he retired. On Aug. 15 of that year, he suffered a spinal stroke that left him wheelchair-bound. He and his wife then moved to Lexington to be near their daughter and her family. He persevered, and as a friend said, "he was always the guy with the big smile." His greatest joys were his family. He took great pride in their accomplishments. His grandchildren were a special joy. He loved to hunt and fish and spent many hours at Johnson Lake. He was a member of the Minden United Methodist Church. For the past 25 years, he attended the Evangelical Free Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Jay Racek; and brother, Archie.
