Description	:	Martha Van Cleef Morton was born February 22, 1891 near DeWitt (sic), Nebraska. She was one of six daughters and three sons born to George C. Van Cleef and Margaret Elizabeth Brolliar Van Cleef who were early settlers in Saline County in the year of 1859. The family moved to the Hubbell area in 1892. She was one of six daughters and three sons born to George C. Van Cleef and Margaret Elizabeth Brolliar Van Cleef who were early settlers in Saline County in the year of 1859. The family moved to the Hubbell area in 1892. Martha spent her childhood on a farm near Hubbell. She attended grade school at the old Loyalty School and graduated from Chester High School in 1911. After graduation she taught school at the Mount Zion School. In 1915 she went to Fort Collins, Colo., and was employed by Colorado State University in the Department of Animal Husbandry. In 1932 she was married to George E. Morton, Chief of the Division of Animal Husbandry at Colorado State Univ. in Fort Collins. Martha was a member of the United Methodist Church of Fort Collins and was active in the Women's Society of the Church. She spent a great deal of time aiding in the development of the Gateway Program for retarded adults. She served as Executive Secretary of the Horticulture Department of the University. Martha was a resident of The Good Samaritan Retirement Village at Fort Collins for the past ten years. She died on May 11, 1983 at the age of 92 years, two months, and nineteen days. She was preceded in death by her husband, George E. Morton in 1939, her parents, five sisters & three brothers, Sybil Russell, Mary Russell, Mabel Bevington, Marjorie Chenoweth, Mae Van Cleef, Ralph Van Cleef and G.D. Van Cleef. She is survived by her two step-sons, Craig Morton of Fort Collins, Colo., Logan Morton of Fair Oaks, Calif., and three nieces and three nephews, Mrs. Lucille Elliott of Little, Colo., Mrs. Roberta Johnson of Albuquerque, N.M., Mrs. Bonnie Porter, Chester, Ne., Frank Bevington, Nampa, Ida., Dean Russell and George Russell, Chester, Ne. Graveside services were held in Chester on May 14, 1983 with burial in the Chester Cemetery.
