Armstrong, 66, died at her home north of town on the Orphans' home at 6:30 o'clock this morning [Jan. 10, 1928]. Pneumonia was the cause of her death. Mrs. Armstrong, before her marriage was Miss Martha Anna Cain. She was born in Bates county, Mo., February 5, 1861. Her father died during the Civil War at Pine Bluff, Ark. He was in the Confederate army. After her father's death she came to Kansas with her mother and uncle, J. S. McCraw. Her mother was later married to Peter Cummings, an Atchison pioneer. Mrs. Armstrong grew to womanhood on the Peter Cummings farm, four miles north of Atchison. Mrs. Armstrong was married to W. R. Armstrong in February, 1886. To this union 6 children were born. Three died in infancy. Charles Armstrong, a son, 29 years of age, died six months ago. Mrs. Armstrong's health has failed steadily since that time. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong have always lived in the community north of Atchison. For nine years they lived on a farm adjoining the Catholic cemetery and for eighteen on what is now the P. K. Symns farm. In May, 1914, they moved to their present home. Mrs. Armstrong was a devout member of the Baptist church and a devoted mother. Surviving her are her husband, and two daughters, Mrs. Warren Underwood of near Atchison and and Mrs. William Hamme of the Philippine Islands; one grandchild, Martha Anna Underwood, and four brothers, Charles Cummings, north of Atchison, James Cummings of Atchison, Joseph Cummings of Los Angeles, William Cummings of Huron, and one sister, Mrs. N. P. Barry, north of Atchison. W. R. Armstrong, one of the finest men on earth, is again dealt a hard blow. His wife died this morning, and she was a most estimable woman. Last fall their only son, Charles, died, and his death caused Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong intense grief. But for the consolation of "Billy" Armstrong, The Globe assures him that the entire community is thinking of him with the deepest sympathy, and The Globe hopes that the high esteem in which he is held will buoy him up in his days of grief. Mrs. Armstrong had not been in the best of health for several years, but there is no doubt that grief over the death of her son broke her heart and hurried her on toward death. She was a wonderful mother and most devoted and all kindness to everybody. Her passing is a loss to the entire community, as well as for her family and relation.
