The witnesses to their marriage were John William Joseph Stephenson's brother Phurness Tinniswood Stephenson, his youngest brother and Martha Ann's sister Catherine Eckhardt. She had 4 children. Two of her four children were twin sons. They were born on the 15th of March 1896 at Proton, South Grey, Ontario, Canada. They died 16 days later on the 31st of March 1896 and they are buried in the same plot as their father. They are remembered at the bottom of the headstone: "Gone but not forgotten; Also, Two Infant Sons; Died March 31, 1896." Martha Ann had another son John Joseph Stephenson and a daughter Gertrude Luella Stephenson. On the 19th of October 1903, Martha Ann would be left a widow with two young children when her husband John William Joseph Stephenson died from typhoid fever.
