She was 92. Mrs. Caples was born March 26, 1902, in Marengo, Iowa. Mrs. Caples was a resident of Vancouver for 68 years. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Caples was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as welfare chairman during most of the Depression. During World War II, she volunteered one day a week at the ration board and knitted sweaters and watch caps for servicemen. She also served on the local boards of the American Cancer Society and the Red Cross. Mrs. Caples enjoyed crocheting, sewing and gardening. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed giving parties. Mrs. Caples and her husband traveled extensively, particularly to England where she located family gravesites in Lincolnshire. Mrs. Caples was preceded in death by her son, William E. in 1986. She is survived by her husband, D. Elwood, at home; a daughter, Barbara C. Peeples of Beaverton, Ore.; a sister, Margaret Livermore of Kennewick, Wash.; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. A graveside service will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Park Hill Cemetery. Vancouver Funeral Chapel is handling arrangements. Memorial donations can be made to Hospice Southwest, P.O. Box 1600, Vancouver, WA 98668, or a charity of your choice.
