Martha, daughter of Jacob and Karolina (Trautman) Bender, was born on Ellis Island, New York, on Nov. 27, 1909, thus becoming the first American in her family. She grew up in a large family on a farm in rural Emmons County. After a long recovery from polio and a brief stint at a business college in Bismarck, Martha married John Zoller in 1929. They lived in Emmons County for a number of years before locating to Burleigh County in the mid-1940s, finally taking up residence in Bismarck in 1948. Together Martha and John founded a construction and real estate development company that endured for some 40 years. Martha was an able and equal partner in this venture; many of Bismarck's homes still bear her handprint. Martha's lifetime achievements, including her dedication to family and homemaking, were her talents as family ancestral chronicler and crafting beautiful quilts and afghans. All of her children and descendants are proud owners of these textiles. Son Robert could not have constructed the family genealogy and history without her memory for dates, places and family lore. Martha also mentored many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Great-grandson Timothy Deutscher wrote of her as the most influential woman in his life. Martha Zoller was preceded in death by her husband John (1992) and son Ronald (1997); two brothers, Edward and Martin; and two sisters, Frieda and Ann. She is mourned by her daughters, Vivian Fairchild (Jamestown), Audrey (Glen) Rolf, Wichita, Kan., June Blumenson, Minneapolis; and sons, James (Becky), Bismarck, and Robert (Edina), Minnesota; her daughter-in-law, Erma Zoller, Bismarck; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren. Martha is also survived by eight younger sisters, Mina, Alvina, Emma, Bertha, Elsie, Ruth, Esther and Mildred. Martha will also be missed by cousins, nieces and many life-long friends and former business associates. " ... and they said to her 'How should we remember you?' " ... and she replied: " 'Remember Ronald's sense of humor and the twinkle in his eyes, "Vivian's loving caretaking and abiding faith, "Jim's frankness and no nonsense approach to life, "Audrey's gentleness and a clean threshold, "Robert's love of reading and all things beautiful, "and June's dark brown eyes and quiet sensitivity.
