Mrs. Davis was born in Swain County, her maiden name being Martha DeHart. She was married to A. L. Davis twenty-six years ago and moved to Texas for a time. Davis, who died from the effects of diabetes was held Saturday from the Joseph DeHart residence in Alarka (this is small town in Swain Co., N.C.). Mrs. Davis was born in Swain County, her maiden name being Martha DeHart. She was married to A. L. Davis twenty-six years ago and moved to Texas for a time. She returned here several months ago with the hope of receiving relief from her malady, but it had fastened itself to her constitution and death resulted Thursday evening at 3:30. She was the mother of eight children, the youngest of whom aged six, was here with her. The interment was postponed with the hope that her husband would be able to get here but he arrived Saturday night, four hours after she had been laid to rest in the DeHart Cemetery, her families cemetery. Mrs. Davis was an exceptionally good woman and was faithful member of the Baptist Church. After receiving word of Martha's death, Dock made it back from Texas but he arrived a few hours after his wife's funeral. It is said that when Dock returned to Texas it was without his only daughter who stayed with her grandparents and later moved in with her oldest brother Samuel Patton Davis. Dock married Bessie (Bains) in Texas in 1915. they are said to have had several children together, but I have no knowledge of any of their names at this time. 3/1/2015 I was told that his body was buried next to his first wife in Swain Co., NC. and share a double headstone. Dock & Martha's children are as follows: 1. Samuel Patton Davis 2. William Grayson Davis 3. James Henry Davis 4. Commodore Lee Davis - he later changed his name Clarence Lee Davis 5. Joel Edward Davis 6. Alfred Hayes Davis 7. Walter J. Davis:b.7/19/1903-d.9/22/1918 at age 15 in Haywood, N.C. 8. Annie Jane Cordelia Davis Notes: Gilland Tx is in Knox Co., 70 miles SW of Wichita Falls Tx. Martha Catherine DeHart was born June 17, 1868.
