Hamm) - EARLY - Mrs. Martha Fuchs, whose critical illness from a stroke of apoplexy was mentioned in our items of last week, died Saturday morning, July 13, at 7:00 o'clock. Funeral services were held on Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian church with the Rev. W.E. Yostler of Dexter officiating, assisted by the Rev. G.C. Albright. The pall-bearers were Harold Ross, John, Carl and Wm. Hartman, Ira Fuchs and Arnold Green, grandsons of the deceased. Music was furnished by a choir composed of Mrs. A. Brink, Mrs. Roe Lashier, Mrs. Geo. Wagner and Florence Steeg. Mrs. Fuchs was born in Leaderback, Germany, August 13, 1857, and died at the age of 71 years and 11 months. When she was seven years of age she accompanied her parents to America, making the trip in a sail ship which took thirteen weeks to complete the journey. After arriving in the United States they came to Lee Center, Ill., where she grew to womanhood. In 1874 she was married to George Fuchs of Lee Center and together made this their home for four years, when they came to Iowa and settled on a farm near Perry. After three years they moved to a farm southeast of Early which they occupied until 1900. On account of poor health of the couple, they gave up farm duties and moved to town which has been their home since. She was member of the German Evangelical church and later joined the Presbyterian church at Early. Mrs. Fuchs has been in poor health for years and about two years ago she suffered a stroke of paralysis which greatly affected her right side and her speech. She fully realized her life was of short duration but bore her affliction without a murmur. On Monday morning. July 8, she was again stricken which paralyzed her mind and rendered her unconscious only at short intervals. Mrs. Fuchs was a splendid woman and friend. Her devotion to her children was intense. She has lived a noble life. She is survived by seven children, Lena Hartman of Chicago, Charles of Sioux Falls, S. Dak, Arthur of Sioux City, Clara Highstreet of Flint, Mich., Hattie Ross, Frank and Anna at Early. One child died in infancy. There also survives one brother, J.B. Weishaar of Howard, S. Dak., nineteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
