Martha Elizabeth Elaine (Kostal) Ambroz was born July 18th, 1909 to Joseph and Anna (Sykora) Kostal in Washington County, Kansas. When Martha started grade school, she did not speak English. Read More	Martha Ambroz age 96 of Winner, SD went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at the Winner Regional Healthcare Center Nursing Home. Martha Elizabeth Elaine (Kostal) Ambroz was born July 18th, 1909 to Joseph and Anna (Sykora) Kostal in Washington County, Kansas. When Martha started grade school, she did not speak English. Her family only spoke Czech. She learned English as she went along, completing her grade school in Kansas. Later, she attended high school in Odell, Nebraska before coming to South Dakota. On March 6th, 1928 Martha, along with her parents, 4 sisters, and one brother moved to a farm Southeast of Winner, SD. Being a hard worker, she helped her father in the fields, milked cows, tended to the animals, and did household chores. Before getting married she worked in various private homes babysitting and keeping house. On April 21st, 1931 Martha married Leonard Ambroz at the Winner Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. To this union, the couple had 2 daughters, Marian and DonnaLee. They lived on a farm Southeast of Winner. Leonard and Martha cherished their time together. They often went dancing and played cards with their friends. In January of 1965 they moved from the farm into Winner to live in the house they built. Leonard and Martha spent a lot of their time camping, fishing and square dancing. Martha was a great gardener. She always had a lot of flowers, especially roses and peonies. Earlier on she would put in a large vegetable garden. Anyone who knew Martha knows she kept her home in a tidy, orderly manner. Her house always looked so neat and nice. She was also known as a wonderful cook. No one can make kolaches like she did. Family meant a lot to Martha, as she looked forward to time spent with her daughters and their families. Martha was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, a 50 year member of the Catholic Daughters (Court Mary Imelda), a 47 year member of the Wilson Extension Club and a member of the "500" card club. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, sewing, and reading. Another one of her favorite things to do was travel. She went on 9 tours by bus and plane to various places including Hawaii and Canada. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren gave her much joy and pleasure. Grateful for having shared her life are her two daughters; Marian Bloom and DonnaLee (Dick) Frantz, her seven grandchildren; Bob (Cindy) McCormick, Shelley (Bob) Kucera, Julie (Mike) Rogan, Doug (Connie) Frantz, Dan (Patty) Frantz, Deb (Terry) Nelson, and Deone Frantz (Shane Nedved), her 17 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren, one sister, Bea Rehak and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard in 1974, her parents, her three sisters, Mary Horstman, Amelia Nelson, Helen Robertson, and her brother Joseph Kostal, one grandson David McCormick and on son-in-law Glen Bloom. Burial in the Winner Cemetery.
