Description	:	Martha Elizabeth Kerby, daughter of Samuel Perry and Mary Frances Pearcy Kerby, was born March 20, 1853 in Schuyler County, MO. She departed this life on June 23, 1956 at the age of 103 years, 3 months, 3 days. She was the third child of a family of ten, seven of who preceded her in death. Read More	Martha Elizabeth Kerby, daughter of Samuel Perry and Mary Frances Pearcy Kerby, was born March 20, 1853 in Schuyler County, MO. She departed this life on June 23, 1956 at the age of 103 years, 3 months, 3 days. She was the third child of a family of ten, seven of who preceded her in death. Two sisters, Mrs. Emma Porter and Mrs. Laura Shumate both of Glenwood, MO survive. She was preceded in death by her brothers, David Henry, Benjamin Lincoln and Samuel Luther and by her sisters, Mrs. Mildred Webb, Mrs. Susan Alexander, Mrs. Sarah Graves and Nancy Ellen. Martha Elizabeth received little formal schooling, but educated herself through reading and an insatiable intellectual curiosity covering all subject available to her through books and personal contact. She taught school for several year before her marriage to Butler Wells Porter on November 28, 1878/ To this union was born seven children: John William, who died in infancy; Charles Webb and Laura Lenore Baughman, who preceded her in death and Perry Wilson, Sarah Bernice Walter, Mary Adelia Studebaker and Chloe Alice Fowler, who survive. Immediately after her marriage to Mr. Porter she had moved with her husband to a farm in northeast Putnam County were they lived until his death on June 27, 1927. Since that time she has made her home with her children and was with her daughter, Mrs. Studabaker in Lucerne, MO at the time of her death. As a young girl she joined the Baptist Church and remained faithful all her life to its Christian teachings and doctrine. When she was 11 years old she read the entire bible and continued reading it until her eyesight failed. In the last few years of her life she read The Book through every year. Her mind and body remained active always, and within the last few month of her life she could quote whole chapters of scripture from memory. She had a very full and active life, was an enthusiastic and loving mother, and always retained rich, friendly humor. She never lost her joy in being alive and participating actively in church and community affairs alike. She cherished her family and was as well loved by her sons and daughters-in-law as she was by her own children. She was particularly fond of young people, and was know as 'Aunt Matt' or 'Grandma Porter' by many other than her own family. She encourage her grandchildren in their pursuits and always well informed in their activities, whether flying kites or flying airplanes. Her warm affection for people of all ages stimulated her own joy in living and enriched the lives of many others. She also retained her interest in community affairs. After her 102 birthday in 1955, she was the 1855 Queen of the Unionville Centennial and rode in a covered wagon at the head of the parade. She remained physically active until the last illness of less than 24 hours, and had walked about in her home the day of her death. She is survived by her four Children, 16 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She is deeply mourned by then and by numerous other relative and will be missed by many in the community. but she is as immortal as history itself, and long after his generation is gone, our grandchildren will tell their children the stories she told us. How great great great great uncle was born in a covered wagon as it was running from the Indians; how another great great great great great uncle ran away from home to live for a time with the Indians; how young Martha lay awake in the night listening to the hoof beats of her father's house as he rode back to join his unit in the union army in the Civil War; how that same Martha live through the era which began when horseback was the fastest means of transportation and ended with jet planes, television, polio vaccine and the hydrogen bomb. this is the warm, inspiring person kind of history which is the true story of the brave and wise people who have given America its heritage of 'make the dream come true.' For her children and grandchildren can do no less that to live up to her expectations and to fulfill her goal of 'every time I do something, I try to do it better the next time'. God has blessed her, and made his face to shine upon her and has given her peace. Funeral services were held at Mt Hermon church Monday afternoon June 24, 1956 at 2 pm, conducted by Rev. J.H. Houston. Interment in Mt Herman Cemetery under direction of Comstock Funeral Home at Unionville, MO.
