| Description | : | Martha Ella Obenchain was born in 1851 in Fulton, Illinois, the daughter of Philip Peter Obenchain and Martha Ireland. When she was still a child, the family moved to Iowa, where they remained till death. While they were living in Fayette, Iowa in 1864, Martha's father and brother joined Union forces in the Civil War and were assigned to join the fight in Brownsville, Texas. They traveled by boat from Memphis, Tennessee, to New Orleans and on the boat both contracted dysentery which proved to be fatal. They never made it to Brownsville, Texas, as both died on...
