Description	:	Martha E. Johnson, 99, of Westmont, Illinois and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at Burgess Square Healthcare Center in Westmont. She was born June 16, 1909, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ethel Rosenberger Berry. She was the first baby born at the Mahaska County Hospital. Read More	Martha E. Johnson, 99, of Westmont, Illinois and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Friday, January 30, 2009, at Burgess Square Healthcare Center in Westmont. She was born June 16, 1909, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of William and Ethel Rosenberger Berry. She was the first baby born at the Mahaska County Hospital. Martha attended Penn Academy for two years and then graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1926. Following her graduation from high school, she continued her education at William Penn College earning a degree in secondary education with an English major. She taught high school English at New London and then at Collins, Iowa. On September 5, 1934 she was united in marriage to Elmer E. Johnson at Oskaloosa. Following her marriage to Elmer she stayed home to care for her family. She also helped her husband at the Tastee Shop in Oskaloosa. Elmer died April 9, 1983. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter X in Oskaloosa, and a long time member of the Board of Trustees at the Oskaloosa Public Library. She loved to read, write, and play board games, especially Scrabble. She also enjoyed music and traveling. Her family includes her daughter Sue Ellen Larsen of Downers Grove, Illinois ; two sons and their wives: Berry and Jan Johnson of Hampton, Iowa, and Charles Johnson and Susan Zeigler of Boone, Iowa , 11 grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters: Cartland Hiatt and Clare Newman, and son-in-law Richard Larsen. Visitation will be held at Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday, February 2 from 12:00 noon to 6:00p.m. Visitation with the family present will be at the church from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with funeral services to follow at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ in Oskaloosa, Iowa. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Congregational United Church of Christ in Oskaloosa, Iowa, First Congregational United Church of Christ in Downers Grove, Illinois, or Oskaloosa Public Library.
