Also Mahaska County Death Record Bk 2 Page 177 Index 226 Martha was the daughter of Azariah Flanders, he was born in Vermont, and her mother Matilda Jane (Strang) was born in New York. MRS. MARTHA MATTOX - Martha Flanders Mattox was born in Jefferson township, Mahaska county on March 17, 1850, and passed away early in the morning of Jan. 17, at the age of 89 years. With the exception of 18 years residence in Oskaloosa, and three months in Grundy county, all her life was spent on the farm where she died. Mrs. Mattox was the daughter of Azriah and Matilda Jane Flanders. Her father was one of the first three men to stake out a government claim in this section when Iowa was still a territory. This was on May 1, 1843. A year later he and his wife came and settled on the claim, which was near the banks of the Des Moines river, it being the custom to settle near the river so as to have the advantage of both wood and water. In 1851, a year after Mrs. Mattox was born the river flooded the lowlands and her father built on the hill, which continued to be the family's habitation. Ever since this farm was first settled it has been at some time the home of some member of the family. On November 6, 1869 Daniel Mattox and Martha Flanders were united in marriage. To this union were born (article cuts off at bottom of page) (remaining article in separate column) In her early married life Mrs. Mattox, with her husband, professed faith in Christ and united with the Coal Creek Community church, being baptized by Rev. Valentine Hites, now pastor at Allerton, Iowa. In later years she transferred her membership to the Oskaloosa Baptist church. She was a devoted and faithful Christian and was ready when the summons came. To her kindred and friends she has bequeathed the heritage of a noble Christian character. Funeral services, conducted by Rev. E.V. Good of Oskaloosa, were held at the Coal Creek church Sunday afternoon, January 21, at 2 o'clock. The text for the general address was Psalm 116:15, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his Saints." Mrs. Leah McMains was the piano accompanist, and Mrs. W. Williams and Mrs. Velma Page sang. Interment was in Coal Creek cemetery.
