BELONGED TO TYPE OF FAMED "OLDEN SOUTH" Mrs. Martha Frances Surghnor Was One of Monroe's Oldest Residents, Having Been Born in 1833 in Rocky Mound, North Carolina. Mrs. Martha Frances Surghnor, widow of the late Lloyd W. Surghnor, passed away last night at 11 o'clock at her home at 317 Arkansas avenue in this city. born at Rock Mound N. C., and coming to Monroe just after the war, she continued to reside here and is believed to have been one of the oldest living residents of Monroe at the time of her death. She had been an invalid for some time and while her death was not unexpected it is a shock to her many friends in this community. Mrs. Surghnor was a graduate of Judson College at Auburn, Ala., and a woman of keen intellect. She was the author of a book "Uncle Tom's Cabin of the Old South," which was published about twenty years ago and brought much popularity to its author in the literary world. She also wrote a number of articles for the local papers at different intervals and was considered among the best read women of the state. In her prime her rare charm won for her many friends who will miss "Grandma Surghnor,: as she was familiarly called by intimates. Mrs. Surghnor was born in 1833 and was therefore 87 years old. Mrs. Surghnor was a lover of flowers and the beautiful and the old homestead place bears mute evidence of the hours she spent in it, for in it grow trees, flowers and shrubbery of every variety that thrives in this vicinity. In her passing Monroe loses one of her old resident and a highly esteemed lady whose literary ability and learning was considered of an unusual character. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Ollie Windes, and four grandchildren, Juanita and John Windes, Lloyd Surghnor and Mrs. Filhiol Breard. One son, Dr. G. Surghnor, died last year. The funeral will take place his afternoon at 3 o'clock with interment in the city cemetery.
