Her last illness was brief and death was due not to any specific ailment, but solely as the result of bodily exhaustion. Funeral services are to be held at the home Thursday afternoon, New Year's day, and burial made in the family lot in Grant View cemetery. Martha Freeman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Manley Freeman, pioneers of Elk township, this county, was born at Cambridge, N.Y., March 22, 1840, and would have been 102 years of age had she lived until the coming March. As a young woman she became a milliner and dressmaker, joining her parents on their farm near Greeley in 1865. In that same year she was married to the late Duane Jenkins, and they were engaged in farming until removing to Greeley three quarters of a century ago. Mr. Jenkins died there Dec. 1, 1901. Since then his widow has been most faithfully and lovingly cared for by his daughter, Ruth, who with a son, Dr. Ben Jenkins of Macomb, Ill., survives her. A child born to Mr. and Mrs. jenkins died in infancy. Mrs. Jenkins was a charter member of the O.E.S. chapter of Greeley, and because of her great age had long been an object of interest and veneration in the village. The death of Mrs. Jenkins is a notable event in the annals of Iowa. Born in 1840, her life impinged upon no less than five wars in which American forces participated--the Mexican war, the Spanish-American war and Civil wars, the first World War and now the second. She was 21 years of age when the south fired upon Fort Sumter as a prelude to the four-year struggle for secession from the Union. When she came to this part of Iowa she entered literally a prairie wilderness, the home of the untamed redskin, the coyote bear, deer, wolf and prairie dog. Life here then could not have been more primitive on the Siberian steppes, yet every obstacle was overcome and every privation endured with the heroism of the pioneer spirit. Mrs. Jenkins had seen all of the transformation of America from the days of the tallow dip to the marvels of modern science. She saw hamlets expand into villages and villages into cities, and she lived to wonder at a world of manifold wonders and achievements. Thus upon the tablets of her memory have been inscribed every great event, every great invention, every monumental accomplishment of the past century History was made before her eyes, covering the astounding era in the annals of man, and at last, worn out with the weight of years, she closed her eyes, upon a world at war. Had she been gifted with a magic pen she could have written nearly every page of the history of Delaware county from personal knowledge and association. Two such lives as hers take us back to the earliest American settlements, and emphasize again not only the infantile character of our country but the amazing strength and surge of the American spirit.
