Description	:	August 5, 1937 - The Reporter - A fine woman of our city, Mrs. Mattie Birkland, suffered a stroke Thursday evening, July 22, which left her right side paralyzed and finally caused her death Sunday morning, August 1st, at 6:00 o'clock. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the home and 2:30 p.m. from the Lutheran church. Rev. M.C. Thompson, pastor of the church, officiated. Music was furnished by Mrs. Carl Hofstad and Miss Florence Berdin. Burial was made in the family lot beside her husband in Evergreen cemetery. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the home and 2:30 p.m. from the Lutheran church. Rev. M.C. Thompson, pastor of the church, officiated. Music was furnished by Mrs. Carl Hofstad and Miss Florence Berdin. Burial was made in the family lot beside her husband in Evergreen cemetery. The pallbearers were Alfred Maurstad, Thomas Bratlan, John Bondhus, Joe Oakes, Willie Simonsen, and Amos Hartsock. The Lewison Funeral Service of Graettinger had charge. Mrs. Mattie Fester Birkland, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ole Eli Fester, was born near Lee, Illinois, September 21, 1866. She was baptized as a child into the Christian faith. Later she was confirmed and remained in the same faith all her life. She spent her childhood days and early womanhood in the community where she was born. On October 15, 1885, she was married to John L. Birkland. To this union were born eight children, four of whom preceded her in death. They continued to live in Illinois until 1805 when they came to a farm in Palo Alto county just a few miles east of Emmetsburg. This was their home for seven years. In 1902 they moved to the Hoprig community northeast of Graettinger, where they lived fourteen years. In 1916 they moved to Graettinger, where she lived until 1931 when Mrs. Birkland and her daughter, Eunice, moved to Emmetsburg, residing here since that time. Her husband, John Birkland, died in 1922. Mrs. Birkland had not been in very good health the last several years, being troubled with high blood pressure and a weak heart. Thursday evening July 22nd, she suffered a severe stroke which left her paralyzed speechless. All was done to keep her as comfortable as possible, knowing there was no cure and that her days to remain on earth were very few. She passed to her reward Sunday morning at the age of 70 years and 10 months. She leaves to mourn her death her four children: Lawrence Birkland of Graettinger; Miss Mattie of Independence; Mrs. Florence Early of Iowa City; and Miss Eunice of Emmetsburg. She is also survived by four sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Serine Anderson of Hawthorne, Calif., Mrs. Margaret Nefsted of Kings, Illinois, Mrs. A.J. Johnson of Graettinger, Mrs. Lawrence Vermedahl and Nels Fester, both of Mason City, Ed Fester of Iola, Kan., and S.E. Fester of Davisburg, Mich. There are four grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends.
