Her parents were poor and she had to work hard when she was young. Later in life her father got into a produce business and got "on top". They were so against her marrying Frans because he was poor. At Ellis Island, Martha was scared stiff that they were going to send them back because she had a bad eye. They were scared and cried "do we have to go back with all these kids". At Ellis Island, Martha was scared stiff that they were going to send them back because she had a bad eye. They were scared and cried "do we have to go back with all these kids". They kept her there for a while and a couple of other doctors examined her eye to see if she had something contagious. She had been born with a defective eye and once they established that it was not contagious they let the family go on.
