MARION RESIDENT MARKS 82nd BIRTHDAY Marion, Oct. 7 - Special Tuesday Mrs. Martha Foxworth Smith attained her eighty-second birthday and that evening the occasion was celebrated with a birthday party at which thirty children and grandchildren were present. After fifty six years of wedlock, the marital tie was severed by Nathaniel's death eight years ago at the age of eighty six. To this union were born twelve children, seven of whom are living, with twenty-seven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. All day Tuesday, Mrs. Smith's neighbors and friends were calling to extend their congratulations and good wishes, bringing and sending in flowers, until the home was a bower of fall blossoms. MULLINS - After a few days illness at the Mullins hospital, Mrs. Martha Foxworth Smith, widow of Nathaniel P. Smith of Marion, died Monday morning. Interment took place at Reedy Creek Church Cemetery Tuesday after services conducted by the Rev. B. F. Allen, pastor of the Marion Baptist Church, of which Mrs. Smith had been a member for many years. He was assisted by Dr. Rufus Ford and the Rev. J. H. Graves, presiding elder of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Smith was in her 84th year, having celebrated her 83rd birthday last fall with a party at her home on Wilcox Avenue, where 30 children and grandchildren gathered to do her honor. She was born at the Foxworth home two miles east of Marion and married when quite young to Nathaniel P. Smith, also a native of Marion County and living in the same community. Soon after their marriage they moved to Marion where Mr. Smith successfully engaged in business until a few years before his death. This devoted couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary not long before his passing. For some time Mrs. Smith had been subject to heart attacks, which necessitated her leading a quiet life, but between attacks she was a regular attendant on all the services of her church, and visited her children in various places. The death of this consecrated Christian woman brings sorrow to many hearts in the town where she had spent most of her life, endearing herself to all with whom she came in contact with her many graces of character. She was the mother of ten children, seven of whom survive. One son, H. Stacy Smith of Mullins; six daughters, Mrs. Minnie Smith of Mullins, Mrs. C. L. Pace of Marion, Mrs. R. E. Currence of Asheville, N.C., Mrs. P. A. Riddick of Marion, Mrs. J. C. Gainey of Raleigh, N.C. and Mrs. Hazel Altman who lived with her mother; one sister, Mrs. H. M. Harrelson of Marion also survives. Published in The State, June 1935 Died Monday morning at three o'clock, at the Mullins Hospital following a brief illness. This good woman, who had spent all of a long and useful life in Marion county, became ill last Wednesday, while at her home on Wilcox Avenue. She was taken to the hospital Friday afternoon. She had spent all of her days going about and doing good, and she was smilingly ready for her eternal rest. A consecrated Christian woman, who only saw in the daily trials and sorrows of life a greater opportunity to serve her Master, Mrs. Smith cheerfully went her way and blessed those with whom she came in contact. Her death brings sorrow to many, most of whom are in the city of Marion where the deceased had spent most of her days and where she came into the fullness of her useful life.
