She was the daughter of Edward Hopper (1780-1820) and his wife Susanna Neff (1781-1867). Her parents were married 31 July 1805 in Hardy County, West Virginia. Edward and Susannah had the following 7 known children: Mary Hopper 1807-1853; Margaret Hopper 1809--; John Hopper 1811--1869; Solomon J. Jane Hart Edwards 29 Oct 1848--30 Sept 1889, Otter Creek Cem, Warren County, OH; Joseph Ely Hart: 6 Sept 1850 Norwich, Franklin County, OH--10 Sept 1851 likely died at same place; John V Hart: 10 March 1852 Iowa--3 Dec 1872 Cochran Cemetery, Lacona Warren Co., IA; William Linn Hart: 20 May 1855 Iowa-5 Sept 1919 Garnett, Anderson County, KS; Moses Alony Hart :1863--1864, b & d likely in Union Township, Poweshiek County IA. The couple lived their final years at the Audubon County farm, about 1-2 miles south of the city of Audubon. Martha's husband Moses died 21 May 1891 Audubon, Audubon County, Iowa. He is also buried in the cemetery, and beside another in the woods. Of the three graves, one is thought to be Martha's. There is no record of Martha Hart's death , nor of Moses Hart's death at the Audubon County Courthouse. Back in the horse & buggy days, doctors would often wait until they had several births and/or deaths to record, sometimes taking months or even a few years to record. Ministers did the same thing with marriages. There might be obituaries on microfilm in the Audubon Public Library. Tradition has it that Grandma Hart and her husband Moses Hart were two of the three burials at the Audubon County Farm. Perhaps records from the County Farm could prove this is so. Letter: Note at top:"This letter was written to Wm of Mrs. Hart's death-I checked at Maple Grove Cemetery records - neither Moses or Mrs. Hart are in Maple Grove. M.G." "Audubon, Is 12/19 1898 Mr. William Hart Dear Sir= It is my duty to write you the very sad news of your mother's sickness and death: She had been stout and hearty for an old lady, since her sickness of two years ago, untill about three weeks ago she fell and hurt her self but had almost recovered from the effects of that when about noon on Thursday Dec 15 she was stricken with paralysis:- A doctor was called quickly but could do nothing for her. She failed rapidly and the doctor was called again. but at five minutes of three on Saturday Morning Dec 17 she passed away with-out a struggle. The friends around her said it was the easiest death they ever witnessed: her death was so very sudden we knew you could not here in time for the body could not be kept. On Sunday the 18th at 12 o'clock she was laid away quickly in a black shroud with a wreath and boquet of lovely flowers: 18 friends and acquaintances followed the bearers to the Maple grove cemetery. Where the body was laid in it's last resting place. everything that could possibly be done for her was done but in vain for her name was called. You have our sympathy in your time of need. R.H.Petty" I'm thinking the Maple grove cemetery referred to in this letter is the Grove of trees behind the house at the County Farm, not the Maple Grove Cemetery first known as Wolf Cemetery, then Aretas Lodge Cemetery, and last as Maple Grove Cemetery.-JR
