Read More	Many a Selby baby had Martha Katherina Sieck's gentle hands on it at birth as she assisted the late Dr. George. After graduating from the Selby High School with the Class of 1926, Martha had attended a three-year nurses training course at Lincoln Hospital in Aberdeen and earned her Registered Nursing (RN) certificate after passing the exams in Pierre. She accepted her first assignment in Selby at the hospital that was built by Dr. Biel in 1910-1911. The small building that was the hospital was next to the Selby Opera House and when Biel left, Dr. George took over, caring for patients for many years with Martha by his side. In those early days, Dr. George and Martha would travel around the area to the farm homes to deliver the babies and few patients were hospitalized. On March 1, 2000, Martha, herself needing care, entered the Good Samaritan Center in Selby. She died at the center on Friday, March 24, 2006, at the age of 98. The daughter of Inger (Mathison) and Jacob Tisdall, Martha was born on their farm west of Selby on Jan. 19, 1908. It was here she grew up and attended a rural school before going on to school in Selby. With her Norwegian background, she grew up enjoying ice-skating and skiing, although the Selby area had few hills for downhill skiing. On Aug. 15, 1930, Martha and Arthur D. Sieck were married in Gettysburg. They farmed south of Selby until moving into town in 1968. Martha and Arthur had four sons and the boys brought their friends home frequently. Martha always had baked goods and great meals she shared with the boys' friends, who called the home "Martha's Café." Martha loved the crowd and the birthday of everyone meant an angel food cake from Martha. Mom wasn't strict, you could call her a gentle woman," said her son Jacob. "She went skating with us and skiing, and she was so good at cooking all the grouse, fish and other game we brought home from our hunting and fishing." She was involved in Cub Scouts with her younger boys, and enjoyed cooking and reading. All four of her boys served in the military. Her husband Arthur died Dec. 11, 1975, and for a time a younger son lived with her after he came back from Vietnam. Martha had been baptized and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church and was active in the Church Women's group. She is survived by her four sons, Darrell (Deloris) Sieck of Selby, Dr. Jacob Sieck of Bowdle, Wally (Nancy) Sieck of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Roy (Jana) Sieck of Aberdeen; four grandchildren, Jason Sieck, Kimberly (Kelly) Cordova, Brian Sieck and Kathryn (Bill) Chase; and two great-grandchildren, Alexandria and Mitchell Chase. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mathilda Van Orman; and three brothers, John, Ted and Henry "Sy" Tisdall. The funeral for Martha was Friday, March 31, at Bethany Lutheran Church in rural Selby with Dale Hamre officiating. Lois Wolf was pianist and Pat Russell was soloist. Martin Norby was usher. Casketbearers were Leland Van Orman of Park City, Mont., Dean Tisdall of Mobridge, Justin Tisdall, Doug Sieck, Bill Rosin and Alan Schorg, all of Selby. Martha's grandchildren were honorary bearers. Burial was in Selby Memorial Gardens with Miller Funeral Home of Bowdle in charge of arrangements. Mobridge Tribune April 5, 2006
