A feeling of very general regret has spread over the city with the news of the sudden death of Miss Martha Kennett, at her home on West Eighth street, last evening at nine forty-five o'clock. Her death was directly caused by internal injuries received in a fall down the stairway Sunday night. It was thought at the time that her worst injury was a broken arm, but later examination revealed internal injuries, which proved fatal. Martha Kennett was born in Salem, Ohio, August 30, 1850. In May 1881, the Thos. Kennett family removed to Concordia, and since that time have made this thier constant home. For several years past Miss Kennett and Mrs. Mary E. Shaw, a cousin, have lived together in a residence built by Miss Kennett, at the corner of eighth and Cedar streets. The deceased is survived by her mother, Mrs. Hannah Kennett, living at 109 East Seventh street, and two brothers, Homer, of 434 West Ninth street and William, who made his home with his sister. Miss Kennett was a quiet, unassuming woman, well like by all who knew her, and there are many in this city who will grieve over her demise. The funeral services will be held at the residence on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock, and Dr. Bushnell will conduct the services. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield) June 2020
